AHS golf taking act on the road

Coming off one very successful season and expecting another, the Allentown High School golf team will be taking its act on the road in a couple of weeks.
Allentown will open the season with a match against Steinert on April 3. The team will then leave the next morning for a tournament in Myrtle Beach.
"We’ll be playing in a high school tournament and we have 13 or 14 kids going," Allentown Coach Doug Hunt noted. "This is the first time we’ve ever done this. We’ll be down there for three days, with two more travel days added to the trip."
And the best part is a parent’s association put on a golf tournament and was able to fund the trip. This golf tournament will be held again on May 4 and it is already sold out.
"It’s amazing what they did," Hunt said.
Amazing is also a word Hunt hopes he gets to use a lot this season to describe his team. Allentown went 11-6 last season and placed fourth at the sectionals with a school record score of 320.
With so many golfers back this season, Hunt believes the team can be "maybe a little better than last year."
Nick Monticello graduated, but so many golfers returned.
Mike Argondizza, Joe Colletti, Will Morris, Mike Novozinsky, Chris Ripa, Brandon Smith and Joe Cook all got in a lot of playing time last season and are back. Colletti is the team captain.
While this is a tough lineup to crack, Nick Salemme, just a sophomore, has done it.
"He’ll definitely be in the top five," Hunt said. "He has played extremely well."
Hunt has to still make some cuts. This is not going to be easy because he has a lot of talented players out. Also competing for playing time are Kyle Abbott, Keith Fernandez, Erik Hoffman, Ben Lawrence, C.J. Nafus, Ryan Nash, Chris Polvere and Rich Potts.
Before the snow storm this past weekend, Hunt and his players were loving the great weather and the chance to get in practice rounds. The team will just try and make do now until the weather either gets better of the bus to Myrtle Beach takes off.
At Myrtle Beach, Allentown will play at several different golf courses against high school teams from around the country. The first day all the teams will play and be seeded. A two-day tournament will follow.
Just like the season, everyone is looking forward to the trip. Allentown has often had good golf teams. This season it will take its swings at being a great one.
