Six file for WTC

WASHINGTON – Voters can expect to see some familiar faces and some new faces in the May 8 Township Council election.
Six candidates will vie for three open seats for four-year terms on the council. Running as a slate with the slogan, "Keep Washington Moving Forward" is incumbent David Boyne, of Barto Way, and newcomers Christine Ciaccio, of Route 130, and Timothy McGough, of Buford Way. Mr. McGough, who serves as chairman of the township Economic Development Advisory Committee, ran in last year’s election but did not win.
Three people will run as separate candidates. Former Mayor Douglas Tindall, of Meadowbrook Road, who served under the Township Council form of government, will run with his slogan, "A Vote for Open Space." Council incumbent Larry Schneider, of Everette Street, will run with his slogan, "An Independent Voice." Regina Arcuri of Walden Circle is also running for council for the first time, on the slogan "We can do better together."
Current Council President Sonja Walter and Councilman Bill Lesniak are not up for re-election until 2009. Rhonda Hyams’ term expires this year, but she said she would not run again this year.
The Township Council form of government was established in June 2005 and is a nonpartisan body. The council form of government replaced the longstanding Township Committee structure, which ran partisan elections in November.
Polls for the election will open at 6 a.m. on May 8 and will remain open until 8 p.m. Sample ballots are expected to be mailed to all registered voters the Wednesday before the polls open.
