A man is still in critical condition following a car accident March 16 that shut down one of the southbound lanes on Route 130 for more than two hours.
According to police, Alraheem McMillan, 30, of East Windsor, was merging from the right lane to the middle lane on northbound Route 130 near Cedar Brook Lane when his 1995 Mercury Cougar hit a 2001 International Tractor, driven by Joel Lopez, 25, of East Windsor, at approximately 1:15 p.m.
Police said Mr. McMillan’s vehicle spun and crossed over the grass median before becoming airborne. While airborne, it was hit by a 2005 Freightliner M21, driven by Alexander Quaye, 51, of Trenton, which was traveling southbound at the border of Cranbury and South Brunswick. Mr. McMillan’s vehicle landed on the road, while Mr. Quaye’s vehicle swerved to the right and drove over a large embankment that surrounds a small, storm water detention area before coming to a stop, police said.
Mr. McMillan was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick with severe head injuries. A hospital spokesperson said Thursday that he is listed in critical condition.
South Brunswick Township police were the first to respond to the, Cranbury Police Chief Jay Hansen said Thursday.
"When they were dispatched, they didn’t realize it had begun in Cranbury Township and it was after they came to the realization that it had started on our side of the highway that they called us and the accident was turned over to us," he said.
The southbound side of Route 130 near Cedar Brook Lane was closed down for approximately two and a half hours while emergency workers cleared debris and removed the Freightliner that had gone over the embankment, police said.
"One lane was opened," Chief Hansen said. "It just was very slow."
Snow, sleet and ice made the highway hazardous at the time of the accident, Chief Hansen said.
"At that time, conditions were extremely poor throughout the area," he said.
Police said no charges have been filed.
