Judy Goldstein expected her Robbinsville High varsity softball team to be good this year. And most softball experts expected Robbinsville to win Monday’s opener at Trenton Central. Yet nobody expected the Ravens to beat the Tornadoes 21-2 (a shortened game via the 10-run rule) in their first varsity contest ever.
Dani Demkovitz was a star in the circle and with the bat. Demkovitz tossed a 7 strikeout, 2-hitter while going 3-for-4 with a double, 3 RBI and 4 runs scored at the plate.
"She kept her pitches high because his strike zone was high," said Goldstein, who like the way her sophomore hurler mixed her pitches and adjusted to the umpire. "She did great. It was a two-hitter and she allowed just one earned run. It was a well-played game by us."
Meanwhile, Megan Leach pounded out 4 hits in 4 trips to the dish while driving in 4 runs and scoring once. She even had a sacrifice.
The Ravens not only collected 11 hits, they also exhibited great patience by taking 15 walks at the plate against the Tornadoes’ backup starting pitcher Rocio Sosa. Furthermore, they pretty much put the game away with an 11-run first inning.
Fallon Jenner (1-for-1 with an RBI double), Ashley Carfagno (1-for-1 with 5 runs and 2 RBI), Allison Haftel (1-for-1 with a RBI), Jenna Lazzaro (a double and 2 runs) and Amber Rylak (2 RBI) all had good days at the plate. But everyone on the Ravens got into the act, offensively and defensively.
"We had a double play to end the fourth. Our center fielder Sarah Munn doubled up a girl at first with a nice throw," added Goldstein. "To get that first win was great."
Winning their first game was also important for the Ravens to build up their confidence because they are about to embark on what could be their toughest stretch of games this season. Next Tuesday Robbinsville is scheduled to host West Windsor-Plainsboro North. Then, Robbinsville is scheduled to take on both Steinert and Allentown, two of the CVC’s toughest teams. But as we know already, Goldstein’s clubs come to battle regardless of who they are playing.
