Princeton HealthCare System taps new board chairman

Princeton HealthCare System’s board of trustees has elected Edward E. Matthews as chairman.
Mr. Matthews is a Princeton resident who has served as vice chairman since 2002. He is senior advisor and honorary director of American International Group, one of the world’s largest insurance companies. He is also director of CV Starr & Co. and Starr International, the private companies that own a substantial interest in AIG.
Mr. Matthews is a trustee emeritus of Princeton University and a trustee of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Princeton Day School.
He received a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics and statistics from Princeton University and a master’s degree in business administration with high distinction from Harvard University. From 1998 to 2002 he served as chairman of the board of directors of Princeton Investment Company, the managing company of Princeton University’s more than $8.5 billion endowment. He is married with four children.
Mr. Matthews’ predecessor as chairman of the board, John S. "Jack" Chamberlin, will continue serving on the board as chairman emeritus. Mr. Chamberlin joined the board of Princeton HealthCare System in 1985 and became chairman in 2002.
Five years ago, the board was largely constituted of Princeton residents, and there were no clearly defined criteria for selection, according to PHCS. Mr. Chamberlin convened a governance committee to examine the structure, composition and practices of the board. Their report and subsequent actions have resulted in much greater diversity in the board’s membership, term limits for trustees and officers of the board, clear conflict of interest policies, expectations for new members to participate and a board education program, according to PHCS.
