A special evening designed to bring Valley senior citizens and young people together has been set for April 28.
Hosted by Hopewell Valley Central High School students, Swing Into Spring will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Atrium of the Merrill Lynch campus, off Scotch Road in Hopewell Township.
"Swing Into Spring" will feature big band music, provided by the Swingadelic band, dancing and light refreshments. Additional musical entertainment will be provided by Central High School students.
"Swingadelic is described as a ‘little big band.’ There will be seven performers, but with a big band sound," said Abigail Waugh, Hopewell Valley Senior Services coordinator.
Swingadelic’s Web site says the New York City-based group "delivers the traditional big band music of Ellington, Basie and Sinatra, mixed with the soulful sounds of Ray Charles and adds just the right dose of some swingin’ Sixties grooves . . ."
Hosting the event along with CHS students are Hopewell Valley Senior Services and the Hopewell Valley Municipal Alliance.
Seniors who attend are invited to bring their high-school-age grandchildren along with them.
Swing Into Spring was the idea of the Hopewell Township Youth Advisory Committee. Formed several years ago, that committee advises township government on issues affecting young people.
"The Youth Advisory Committee thought the dance would be a good way to ‘connect the generations’ of our residents," said Ms. Waugh.
"For young people who attend, the dance is a chance to learn about big band music. For seniors, it’s a chance to meet and find out about our young people," Ms. Waugh added.
There will be a high school student at each Swing Into Spring table, to host seniors, take their coats and generally help out. For tickets, which are $15 per person, call the Hopewell Valley Parks and Recreation Department at 737-3753.
