East Amwell

   At approximately 9:25 on April 9, a motorist traveling north at a high rate of speed on Route 179 in front of the Hunterdon County Fairgrounds struck a large tree.
   Emergency responders from the Amwell Valley Ringoes Rescue Squad, paramedics from Hunterdon Medical Center, the Lambertville-New Hope Ambulance and Rescue Squad, the West Amwell Fire Company and Raritan Township’s ESU police unit were on the scene within minutes of the crash and found a trapped driver, unconscious and not breathing.
   Rescue workers from Ringoes and the Lambertville-New Hope squad had to extract the critically injured driver from the wreckage. It took 20 minutes for rescuers to get him out.
   A New Jersey State Police NorthStar helicopter was called to the fairgrounds so the patient could be airlifted. NorthStar delivered the patient to Capital Health System at Fuld in Trenton where he was treated for multiple fractures and head trauma.
   As of April 11, the victim was in a coma at the trauma center.
   State Police are investigating.
Lambertville

   Matthew Bergen, 41, of Philadelphia was charged with drunken driving Saturday.
   Police stopped Mr. Bergen at 1:13 a.m. on Route 29 in the area of Valley Road after he was observed swerving, police said.
   Mr. Bergen also was found to have a suspended driver’s license as a result of a drunken driving conviction and a warrant for his arrest.
   The warrant, with bail set at $885, was issued by Hopewell Township for failure to comply with a judge’s sentence on traffic charges.
   Mr. Bergen also was charged with reckless driving, failure to keep right, unlicensed driving and driving while suspended.
   He was released without bail.
   David Eitel, 33, of Clark is facing multiple charges after he allegedly caused a disturbance at a local bar Saturday.
   Police were called to the Lambertville Station Restaurant because of an unruly patron, police said.
   Mr. Eitel was arguing with employees and assaulted a bartender, police said. He also became combative as he was arrested.
   Mr. Eitel was charged initially with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest and was taken to Hunterdon County Jail in lieu of bail.
   Upon his arrival at the jail, Mr. Eitel continued to be combative and allegedly assaulted a corrections officer.
   He then was transported to Hunterdon Medical Center for evaluation. He is facing additional charges for aggravated assault on an officer and simple assault for the initial incident with the bartender.
