MONROE Police have arrested two men in connection with a series of vehicle burglaries that took place Saturday in Monroe, East Brunswick and Cranbury.
Police said Danilo Martinez, 22, of New Brunswick, and Walter Espinoza, 26, of North Brunswick, have been charged with causing damage to two cars in Monroe. Police said they believe the men were involved in break-ins in East Brunswick and Cranbury, as well.
The cost of the damage to the two cars in Monroe was less than $500, Monroe Detective Sgt. Lawrence Linke said.
Police said they were dispatched to the Barnes and Noble warehouse on South River-Cranbury Road at 11:29 a.m. Saturday on a report of someone in a green Dodge Caravan breaking into a vehicle. Officers noticed damage to a 1992 Honda Civic in the parking lot, but nothing appeared to have been stolen, police said.
Police said a security officer took down the license plate for the Caravan, and the van was stopped at 12:32 p.m. as it was leaving a parking lot on Centre Drive. Officers saw a GPS unit and a stereo in plain view in the vehicle, and also found a Honda Accord parked in the Centre Drive parking lot with a broken window, police said.
Police said Mr. Martinez and Mr. Espinoza were arrested and interviewed.
Each of the two men has been charged in Monroe with two counts of burglary, criminal mischief and conspiracy to commit burglary and one count of possession of burglary tools, police said.
Both men were lodged in the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in default of $35,000 bail. Detective Sgt. Linke said Mr. Martinez has since been released.
