After a couple of successful season as a member of the Cecil Community College (North East, MD.) men’s basketball team, Keyron Sheard, of Red Bank, will continue his playing career at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Sheard, who received his signed National Letter of Intent to play for the NCAA Division I program last week, was a starter for the 2006 National Junior College Athletic Association Division II champion Seahawks. The Seahawks established the program’s single-season victory record in each of the last two years by going 33-2 in 2005-06 and 33-3 in 2006-07.
Sheard, who graduated from Red Bank Regional, the same high school as Cecil coach Bill Lewit, finished second in the country with 8.8 assists per game as a sophomore and also averaged 10.8 points. He was named to the all-tournament teams at each of this year’s postseason competitions – national, regional and conference – and was a First Team All-Maryland JUCO and Second Team All-Region XX selection. The Seahawks’ Most Valuable Player previously earned the team’s hustle, defense, and iron man awards making him the first person to receive all four of the program’s individual honors in his career.
“Keyron is the ultimate team leader on both ends of the floor,” said Lewit. “He puts his coaches and teammates first and without him this year’s team could have been very average. He has a knack of bringing out the best in everybody and possesses outstanding basketball skills.”
