Elizabeth Allen
Elizabeth Gilroy Allen of Lawrence died recently. She was 46.
Born in Harrisburg, Pa. to William J. and Elizabeth Zapolski Gilroy, she was raised in Levittown, Pa., and was a graduate of Pennsbury High School and Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey).
She lived in Lawrence for many years.
A special education teacher at the Center for Autistic Children in Princeton, she most recently worked as a resource room teacher in the Hopewell Valley Regional School District.
She enjoyed art and music. She found peace and tranquility in nature and strength through her strong spiritual beliefs in earth-based religion.
She is survived by her children, Zachary Allen, 14, and Dante DeLucia, 12; life partner Phyllis DeLucia; sister Jane Gilroy; father William Gilroy; and father-in-law Carmen DeLucia.
A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. May 20 at the Unitarian-Universalist Church at Washington Crossing, 268 Washington Crossing-Pennington Rd., Hopewell Township.

Elmer Peters
Elmer E. "Bud" Peters, of Lawrence, died May 4 at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. He was 79.
Born in Hamilton Township, he was a resident of Lawrence for the past 56 years.
Mr. Peters retired in 1991, after 45 years as a decorator with Lenox China in both Trenton and Pomona. He also was employed at one time for 10 years as a proofreader with the Trenton Times.
Mr. Peters also was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of the Slackwood Presbyterian Church for 47 years and had served as an Elder and Financial Secretary.
Son of the late Walter E. and Minnie Zickler Peters, he is survived by his wife, Virginia Bowers Peters; three daughters, Susan Janoski and her husband Michael, of Stockton, Sherry Branson and her husband James, of Yardley, Pa., and Sandy Peters-Murray and her husband John, of Lawrence; four grandchildren, Tracey Branson and her husband Karim, Tami Branson, Benjamin Branson and Stefanie Frump and her husband Steven; two brothers, Walter E. Peters Jr., of Fallsington, Pa., and William L. Peters, of Hopewell; a sister, Anne Mayer, of Chrisfield, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.
Private family burial services were held in the Ewing Cemetery. A public memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Slackwood Presbyterian Church, 2020 Brunswick Pike, Lawrence.

Jane Simkins

Jane S. Simkins, of Lawrence died Monday at home. She was 83.
Born in Boston, Mass., she was a 1945 graduate of Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass. She was a long time substitute teacher at the Lawrence High School, teaching English and other languages. She was a member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Pennington for 39 years where she had been head of the altar guild for 18 years and secretary for the stewardship committee for six years.
Daughter of the late James J. Sanders and Clara G. Sanders Austin, she is survived by her husband, Col. Roy G. Simkins Jr.; a son and daughter-in-law, Roy G. III and Mary P. Simkins, of Limerick Pa.; a brother, Daniel G. Sanders and sister-in-law Edith Sanders, of Long Island, N.Y.; and a grandchild, Kyle A. Simkins.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 300 South Main Street, Pennington. Interment will be at a future date in the Memorial Garden of St. Matthew’s Church.

Alnetta Gant
Alnetta Brenda Haynes-Gant, of Lawrence, died May 4 at Capital Health System’s Mercer Campus. She was 57.
Born in Whiteville, N.C., Mrs. Haynes-Gant was a 1967 graduate of Mt. Olive High School, in Whiteville. She was a resident of Lawrence for over 25 years.
Mrs. Haynes-Gant was a member of St. John’s Baptist Church and a former member of El-Bethel Baptist Church. She was employed as clerk with Mercer County Board of Social Services in Trenton 25 years.
Daughter of the late John Haynes and Inez Graham Haynes, sister of the late Mae Ida Thompson and Jimmy B. Haynes, she is survived by her husband of 34 years, the Rev. Edward E. Gant; three daughters, Felicia N. Gant, Jena M. Gant, both of Lawrence, Jillean Jackson, of Trenton; a son, Edward E. Gant III, of Lawrence; three sisters, Joyce Haynes, of Trenton, Priscilla Best-LaForte, of Linden, Barbara Haynes, of Trenton; a brother, Wendell Haynes, of Fayetteville, N.C.; four sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law, Cardella and Allen Ansley, Sandra and John Nichols, Fleming and Joyce Gant and Diane Gant; six grandchildren, Daquan, Ameer, Dashane, Davon, Jordan and Jaquay; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were Wednesday at St. John’s Baptist Church, in Ewing. Interment will be in Ewing Cemetery.
Mary Poleo
EWING – Mary Grace Poleo died on May 3.
Mrs. Poleo was born in Trenton and resided in Ewing Township for the past 42 years.
She graduated from Cathedral High School and the LaTour Beauty Academy.
She was a hair stylist and colorist at her salon, Shear Magic, in Lawrence Township.
Mrs. Poleo is survived by her husband of 60 years, Anthony Poleo, a son, Joseph A. Poleo and three daughters, Natalie Scully and her husband Randy, Josie Poleo-Gustino and Toni Maria Smith and her husband William; five grandchildren, Natalie Gustino, Brandy Corbo and her husband Chris, Nicole Bamberger and her husband Ricky, Dominick Gustino and Anthony J. Poleo; and five great grandchildren, Giavanna Gustino, Briella Bamberger, Niko Bamberger, Nicholas Corbo and Joey Corbo; and her lifelong friend, Kathy Russo. Also surviving are a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Josephine and Jay Cobb and their children, Brian and Brenda and their grandchild, Ashton.
The funeral was held Monday at Poulson & Van Hise Funeral Directors, 650 Lawrence Road. Entombment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery Mausoleum, in Hamilton Township.
Oliver Houghton
PRINCETON – Oliver Van Lieu Houghton of Princeton died Monday. He was 86.
Born in Trenton, he grew up in Lawrence and moved to Princeton upon his marriage.
He was a self-employed building contractor and civil engineer and had his own business in Princeton from 1945 to 1990, when he retired.
He attended Princeton High School, Hun School of Princeton and graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in civil engineering.
He served as an officer in the Navy Civil Engineering Corps, 68th Seabee Battalion, during World War II .
He was an active member of The Nassau Club, Trinity Church, the American Legion and Springdale Golf Club.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing golf and at the Springdale Breakfast Club later in life.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marion Stover Houghton; son and daughter-in-law Douglas and Katherine; daughter and son-in-law Jill and James B. Mudge; brother Jack of Florida; and grandchildren Elizabeth, Sam and Karly.
A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. today at Trinity Church, 33 Mercer St., Princeton. A reception will immediately follow at Springdale Golf Club.

Alice Mackey
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Alice B. Mackey died Saturday at her residence. She was 77.
She was born in Trenton. She attended Rider College in Trenton and graduated from Southwest Business School of Chicago.
Mrs. Mackey was a member of the Junior League of Trenton, Estainer Group in Columbus, St. Louis and the Fort Myers Congregational United Church of Christ.
Daughter of the late Benjamin and Mildred Johnson Beach, she is survived by her husband of 56 years, Eric; a son, Scott Mackey and his wife Melanie, of Columbus, Ohio; a daughter, Laurie McNeil and her husband Rick, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla; a sister, Doris Cook, of Cape Coral, Fla; a brother, Richard Beach, of Lawrence; two grandchildren, John McNeil and Lindsay Mackey; and nephew Charles Cook, of Cape Coral, Fla.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Poulson & Van Hise Funeral Directors, 650 Lawrence Road. Burial will be in the Ewing Cemetery, Ewing Township.
