Lindsey Gallo turned in the fastest 1,500-meter run in the United States this year when the Howell High School graduate won the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational race in 4:09.60. She eclipsed the meet record set back in 1990 by PattiSue Plumer of 4:12.89.
Gallo, who was a state champion and All-American at Howell, now competes professionally for Reebok. After her brilliant career at Howell, Gallo went to have a stellar collegiate career at the University of Michigan, where she won multi Big 10 titles and was several times an All-American.
Former Colonial Kerry Little received the Rowan University Athletic Director’s Scholar Athlete Award at the college’s season-ending banquet honoring its outstanding athletes of the 2006-07 year. Little, a graduate of Freehold Borough High School, is a starter on the women’s soccer team. The sophomore is majoring in biological sciences and has a 3.91 grade point average. It’s the second straight year she has received the award that goes to the male and female athletes with the highest GPA.
Also receiving an award was Freehold’s Katherine Rowland, a goalie on the women’s field hockey team. Rowland was honored with the Rowan Prof Award that goes to the male and female athletes who exemplify the meaning of the Rowan traditions of responsibility, ownership, winning, accountability and no excuses. Rowland, a senior, is a graduate of St. John Vianney High School, Holmdel.
The Colts Neck Comets, an U-11 Girls Monmouth-Ocean Soccer Association National 2 team will be holding tryouts on Tuesday at the Five Point Park in Colts Neck for its 2007-08 U-12 roster. Freehold Borough’s Justin Frick is having a big freshman season for the Princeton University men’s track and field team. Frick won the men’s high jump at the Ivy League’s Heptagonal Games, which were held in Princeton. Frick and Cornell’s David Pell each jumped 6-10 3/4 with Frick getting the gold on fewer misses. He did not miss a jump until the bar was raised to 2.13 meters (7-0). Princeton finished second to Cornell, 180-133. The win at the Heps was just the start for the Princeton frosh. He followed it up with a victory at the IC4A’s last weekend in Princeton. It was a very special win for the Freehold Borough graduate because he topped 7-0 for the first time wi th a 7-0 1/4 jump.
Frick, who was All-Ivy League during the indoor season, won the NJSIAA Meet of Champions state title and was an All-American at Freehold Borough High School.
