On May 6, students of Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts earned black belt certifications at William Paterson University in Wayne. Only 55 of the 190 students tested passed this exam, which is a rigorous and comprehensive test of mental and physical skill.

Many of the candidates, whose ages ranged from 6 to 59, spent years training for this ultimate goal. A culmination of all prior training and testing, all the dedication, commitment and progress from white through brown belts is in preparation for this exam. Aside from numerous tests on their technical skill, strength, flexibility and endurance, these students also underwent exhausting rounds of sparring, kick boxing and grappling (close range self-defense). In addition, students were graded on intangibles like self-discipline, confidence, poise and verbal presentation skills.

Among those who passed these tests and achieved his black belt certification is Austin Liu, of the Tiger Schulmann’s Center in Marlboro.

Tiger Schulmann’s holds black belt tests about every two months. The next one is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 16. Family and friends of the candidates are admitted free and are encouraged to attend.
