MONTGOMERY Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society’s signature event, is coming to a town near you.
In a combined effort between Montgomery Township and the American Cancer Society, the relay, an overnight event that raises funds for cancer research, education, advocacy will be held June 23 and 24 at Montgomery High School.
The first-time relay for Montgomery Township is an opportunity for the community to come together for a great cause, said Pam Gizzi, co-chair of the event.
Many relay participants are forming teams and competing to raise as much money as possible. Montgomery High School students have formed about 20 teams all with a theme. The Spartans, Under the Sea, Red White and Blue, Tie Dye and Snapple are just a handful of the teams preparing for the event.
"This is a great event for a great cause," said Ms. Gizzi. "The students especially are very excited about participating on their theme teams."
Karen Zimmerman, director of Montgomery Township Recreation Department, played a key role in planning the relay and organizing the behind-the-scenes portion of the event. The township was exploring the idea of holding the event in Montgomery Park, but decided the best location would be in Cougar Stadium at the high school, she explained.
"We decided it’s more intimate on the track because everyone is so close and working together," said Ms. Zimmerman. "This is a community event with food vendors, face painting, DJ’s and carnival-type activities."
A picnic, campout and "relay style" walk or run around the track followed by a special ceremony at nightfall with participants holding candles around the track are included in the event’s schedule. Montgomery High School students will host events for younger children at night including three-legged races, musical chairs and paint-on tattooing.
During the event, teams will take turns walking or running laps around the track through the night. The goal is to try and keep at least one person on the track at all times. Those interested in participating may pre-register as a single or part of a team, or register at the door on June 23. Registration is $10 and pre-registration is not required. Community organizations and business teams are welcome to attend. Deputy Mayor Louise Wilson is expected to attend.
The turnout is expected to be large, said Ms. Zimmerman.
"We want the public, community organizations and family members all to attend the event," she added.
Relay for Life events are designed to bring together those who have been touched by cancer in any way. Cancer survivors, families of those lost and community members working to fight cancer work as one to raise cancer awareness.
