Stacy Gemma and SG2 in The Grove in Shrewsbury held an Ice Cream Social June 2 and raised more than $1,000 to help with medical expenses incurred by the family of Jake Healy of Ocean Township. The 11-year-old is waging an ongoing battle with leukemia. SG2 arranged to have an ice cream truck for the day and all ice cream purchases directly benefited Jake and the Healy family. Oakhurst Foodtown donated ice cream bars, and the Sea Gull’s Nest at Sandy Hook donated Italian ices to support the cause.
Jake was first diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 5 and is now in remission at The Valerie Fund Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch. Anyone interested in making a donation can contact Robin West at (732)741-8686 for more information.

Oceanic Free Library, Avenue of Two Rivers, Rumson, has begun its storytime series for children age 10 months and older. “Baby Storytime” for children age 10 months to 2 years will be held June 19 and 26; July 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31; and Aug. 7 from 10-10:20 a.m. “Toddler Storytime” for children age 2-3 will be June 19 and 26; July 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31; and Aug. 7 from 10:30-10:50 a.m. A parent or caregiver must accompany children to either of the above. The multimedia presentation, “Amazing Adventures,” will be July 17, and videos and a treat will be July 31. The Sea Bright Recreation Committee will host its fifth annual Beach Bash fundraiser Saturday, June 16, from 4-9 p.m., on the Sea Bright Municipal Beach. Admission/donation includes all-you-can-eat barbecue; unlimited children’s rides and games; live music and dancing; as well as arts and crafts and many other family activities. The event also features a gift auction and 50/50 raffle. Donations are $15, children under 12 free. Rain date is June 17. The annual event raises money for equipment and funds recreation programs.

Navesink River Rowing (NRR) will sponsor a free event to introduce the community to the exciting sport of rowing Saturday, June 23, from 9 a.m. to noon. NRR is teaming up with U.S. Rowing and will host a fun-filled morning during which participants can try out rowing shells, tour the boatyard and meet with NRR members. A boat-naming ceremony is also planned for 10 a.m. as part of the festivities. Signups will be available for both youth and adult summer learn-to-row lessons.
The event will take place at the foot of Maple Avenue, on the Navesink River (adjacent to the new Hovnanian headquarters on Maple Avenue).
