"Our goal is to get to the Final Four. In the Final Four anything can happen," said Jeff Meszaros, the manager of the Bordentown 12-Year-old Little League All-Star team.
Last season as 10’s, Bordentown was the surprise team of District 12, placing second to a Washington club which featured a couple of nearly unhittable pitchers. Many of those fine Bordentown players are on this year’s 12’s.
"This team is a good combination of the Bordentown Bandits 12-U travel team (which won the Summerfest Tournament a few weeks ago) and the middle school team. They all know each other," said Meszaros. "Our strength is we’ll rely on our pitching and our solid defense."
Robin Antozzeski (infield) and Ashley Vastano (shortstop) are Bordentown’s top pitchers. However, Ally Potts (third base) and Selena Senachai (second base ) would be the ace pitcher for some of the District squads.
"They will throw strikes and won’t give away too many free bases," said Meszaros of his top starters.
At catcher, Bordentown will feature Maryrose Szecker.
"She’s a very good catcher and she carries a very big stick," remarked Meszaros of Szecker.
Kaylee Creegan is a solid second baseman/shortstop while Kelly Yanicil is a strong shortstop/first baseman.
"Dominique Douthit is a great contact hitter," said Meszaros, who’ll play Douthit in the outfield.
Slick-fielding speedster Sammie Martinez will play center field while Emily Meszaros, is a left-handed outfielder with a knack for getting on base. Ashley Pandolf is a fast, left-handed outfielder while outfielder Alexis Wiggley has plenty of power. Sarah Lyons can play just about any infield or outfield position, but she’s primarily a third baseman.
"We had a real good turnout this year and the girls are working hard," said Meszaros. "We’d like to combine our big bats with our small ball and if we execute we should be in good shape."
Because Meszaros is carrying 13 players, he’s allowed to carry three coaches, including himself. He’ll coach third base while Tommy Potts will be the coach at first. Karen Antozzeski is the dugout bench coach, which is very important position this season given all the rule changes.
