Jamie Cullen of Von Thun’s Country Farm Market watches celebrity chef Bobby Flay on the Food Network channel with her family all the time. She was thrilled to find out that Chef Flay was coming to Von Thun’s Farm to grill corn for a segment for CBS last week.
Although Bob and Cindy Von Thun knew that the segment would feature Chef Flay, Ms. Cullen and many of the other employees who were present for the taping were not aware that the celebrity chef was coming. When Ms. Cullen found out that Chef Flay was at the farm, she called her family and neighbors, who rushed over.
"I was really excited because I watch his shows all the time," said Ms. Cullen. "It was kind of like a rock star was here."
The segment, "Holiday: A Corny Subject; Bobby Flay on grilled corn," aired on CBS Sunday Morning. The segment was filmed June 28 and was a special adapted from Chef Flay’s weekly cooking segment, "Boy Meets Grill" featured on CBS News’ The Early Show.
A CBS producer wanted to visit a New Jersey farm where Chef Flay could grill corn, said Jamie Cullen, an employee of Von Thun’s Farm on Ridge Road.
The producer found the Von Thun Web site and decided to visit the farm.
"He walked around the farm and liked it," said Ms. Cullen.
Chef Flay is a Food Network personality featured in such television shows as "Throwdown with Bobby Flay" and "Iron Chef America." He owns four restaurants: The Mesa Grill, Bolo, and Bar American in New York City and Bobby Flay Steak in Atlantic City. He has authored six cookbooks.
Chef Flay and his crew arrived at Von Thun Farm at noon on June 28 and set up in front of the farmhouse. He grilled fresh Jersey corn in the husk, picked from the Von Thun fields. In addition, he prepared special butters, sauces, and cheese that he served the grilled corn with. After the shoot, which lasted until 2 p.m. the crew cooked hot dogs and served more corn with the special sauces Chef Flay prepared.
"The taste combinations were fantastic," said Ms. Cullen.
A number of Von Thun’s employees and some of their families were present for the taping with Chef Flay and took pictures with him afterward.
"It’s probably the smallest audience he’s ever had," Ms. Cullen said with a laugh.
