Matawan High School praised for new turf field

It has been mentioned in a few letters to the editor that the new turf field at the Matawan/Aberdeen High School is only being used by a few people and did not justify the expense. This is not the case and it should be known that the field is being used by many different sports and recreation organizations.

The Aberdeen/Matawan Soccer Club (a volunteer organization) has been using this field on a regular basis. With over 500 kids in our league, many of them have had a chance to use this new field with the anticipation of some day playing for the school team on the field. Not only is it a great facility that is practically immune to the weather, but it has allowed some of the natural grass fields – that we would have been using for practices and games – to regenerate growth.

Many people do not understand the thousands of dollars it takes on a yearly basis to properly maintain a grass field. I know that Pop Warner football, baseball, soccer – along with fund-raising events have used this field – without having to worry about destroying the grass. In fact, the 2007 spring travel soccer season was able to begin their scheduled games on time at the end of March, while many towns had to cancel their games due to poor field conditions.

The new field is state-of-the-art, accessible, and a great benefit for the kids in the Matawan/Aberdeen area.
