Bordentown baseball 11’s hope to rebound from opening pool play loss

Although the Bordentown 11-year-old Little League baseball team dropped a 12-9 decision in its opener versus Ewing at Cranbury-Plainsboro on Monday, manager Pat Welsh liked a lot of what he saw out of his club in the contest.
"We put the ball in play. We only had two strikeouts for the entire game," said Welsh.
After Ewing put two runs on the board in the top of the first, Bordentown answered with a run in the bottom of the frame as Zack Gakeler and Austin Papp singled and Austin Goeke chased home Gakeler with a hit.
Bordentown went ahead 5-2 with four runs in the second. Austin Chaszar and Cole Clauser both walked and Tyler Revay singled to load the bases for Pat Welch, who tied the game with an RBI groundout. Then, following another run-scoring grounder by Gakeler, Papp doubled in two runs.
Bordentown fell behind 12-5, but Chazsar knocked in a run with a double and Clauser tripled in a pair of runs in a four-run fifth to enable Bordentown to inch closer.
"It was a good game to watch because both teams hit the ball," said Welsh, whose club had eight hits and drew seven walks. Gakeler started for Bordentown and surrendered eight runs in four innings to take the loss. Papp pitched two innings of relief and allowed just one hit and four runs (only two were earned).
Bordentown had runners on first and second with one out in the sixth but couldn’t score.
Yesterday (Wednesday) Bordentown was scheduled to have played Cranbury Plainsboro at HTRBA. Today (Thursday) at 8 p.m., Bordentown is scheduled to host HTRBA. Then on Saturday at 5 p.m., Bordentown is scheduled to wrap up pool play with a game at Allentown.
