Police say they are closing in on at least two suspects in connection with a series of overnight break-ins of vehicles early Monday in Dayton and Monmouth Junction.
Police believe the suspects broke into as many as seven vehicles in Fresh Ponds Village, Quincy Circle, and the East Garden apartment complex between 12:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. Monday, stealing several Global Positioning System units and other loose items, according to police spokesman Detective Jim Ryan.
Some of the vehicles had windows smashed with rocks, while others were unlocked, police said.
Police responded at 2:45 a.m. Monday to the East Garden complex on Georges Road on a report of two suspicious people. When police arrived, the two suspects ran away.
A vehicle was reported stolen several minutes later from a residence on Major Road across from Crossroads South Middle School, police said.
Police obtained a search warrant early Monday morning for a vehicle in the parking lot of the East Garden complex and found several GPS units in the back of the vehicle, as well as the other stolen items.
Although no one is yet in custody, police expect to arrest and charge at least two suspects within the next day, including one resident of South Brunswick and one resident of Franklin Township, Detective Ryan said.
