WTLL 10’s excelling in District 12 play

By: Kyle Moylan
Peter Hayes has a team that loves to play baseball. Ironically, the team is so good it never plays an entire game.
With a 13-3 win over HTRBA in the double-elimination portion of the District 12 Tournament, Washington improved to 5-0 while only playing a total of 20 innings.
While Washington may have worn out a few bats, all this offense has allowed Manager Peter Hayes to preserve his pitching staff.
"I have six pitchers and I have used them all," Hayes noted. "No one has gone more than once yet. I believe in saving young arms."
Washington opened play with an 11-1 win over Sunnybrae. Jimmy Matt pitched all four innings to record the win. Chris May had two hits (including a homer) and a walk. Ross Colton had two hits and three runs scored.
Colton pitched the shutout in a 15-0 win over Ewing. Colton also had four hits and three runs scored. Brandon Klein had two hits and two RBI.
"Top to bottom of the lineup, we were hitting a lot of line drives," noted Hayes.
Ryan Krebs pitched the four innings for Washington in a 20-1 win over Florence. Colton scored four runs. May homered and scored three runs. Jimmy Matt had two hits and three runs scored.
Ryan Hayes was the winning pitcher in a 14-0 victory against East Windsor. Colton hit two homers in the game. Krebs was 4-for-4 with three runs scored.
With its 4-0 record in pool play, Washington easily advanced into the final round. Washington kept its hitting going in a 13-3 win over HTRBA at Nottingham on Monday. All of the games in the final round will be held at Nottingham.
May started and worked three innings. Ben Sanders pitched the fourth. Both players also had good offensive games. May hit a two-run homer. Sanders hit a two-run single. Krebs also had a two-run hit. Sean Hunter then closed out the game with a two-run single in the last of the fourth, pushing the score to 13-3 and enacting the blowout rule.
"Everyone on the team can hit and play the field," May noted.
   Manager Hayes agrees.
"We’re just a good hitting team," Hayes said. "We also have guys that love to play the game."
This team should get a chance to play more as the compeition is getting a lot tougher. Washington and Allentown were scheduled to face each other in a battle of undefeated 5-0 teams last night. The winner of that game advances to the winners’ bracket final on Saturday.
