Arline J. Van Wessem

Arline J. Van Wessem of Princeton died Thursday at University Medical Center at Princeton. She was 90.
Born, raised and educated in Okawville, Ill., she moved to St. Louis in 1935 and following her marriage in 1940 lived in St. Louis before moving to Hattiesburg, Miss. in 1973. She moved to Livingston in 1977 and was a Princeton resident since 1985.
While in Livingston, she was a clerk at the YMCA. She was a retail clerk in St. Louis and Hattiesburg.
She was an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Messiah in Princeton and known there as "Mom."
Daughter of the late William and Amanda Middendorf, wife of the late Lester James Van Wessem, sister of the late Violet Middendorf and grandmother of the late Mark J. Goerss, she is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Katherine V. and the Rev. Dr. John Mark Goerss of Pennington and Eunice Ann and Mark W. Schowalter of Florence, S.C.; sister and brother-in-law Eunice and Amos Tonsing of St. Louis; grandchildren Deborah K. Sellers and Karen E. and her husband William Butler; great-grandchildren Kayla Ruth and Britton N. Sellers, and Mathew W. Butler; niece Lucinda Tonsing; and nephew William Tonsing and his wife June.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at the Lutheran Church of the Messiah, Nassau Street at Cedar Lane, Princeton, with the Rev. Dr. John Mark Goerss officiating.
Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Roseland Burial Park, Hattiesburg, Miss.

Paul D. Bertles
Technician at Mobil Research
WEST WINDSOR Paul D. Bertles died Wednesday at home after battling lung cancer. He was 77.
Born in Trenton, he was a lifelong area resident.
He retired from Mobil Research and Development in Hopewell Township as a technician and had previously worked for Hydrocarbon Research, RCA Astro during the development of the space program and McGraw Hill.
He was the youngest member, at age 15, of the Mercerville Rod & Gun Club when it was formed in 1945. He was also a member of the West Windsor Senior Citizens Club, Hightstown Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the owner of Bertles Antiques in Robbinsville.
Mr. Bertles was a Navy veteran of the Korean War serving on the USS Everglades AD24. As a pipefitter class A, he earned the Navy occupation service medal and national defense service ribbon.
Son of the late Charles D. Jr. and Gertrude Strouse Bertles and grandfather of the late Denise Lynn Bertles, he is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ramona Mull Bertles; son Timothy Bertles of West Windsor; sisters and brothers-in-law Estelle and Leon Herman of Chesterfield, and Carol and Robert Hullfish of Lawrence; sister-in-law Joan and her husband John Lup of Bordentown; grandchildren Kelly M. Bertles of Hamilton Township and Kevin T. and David J. Bertles with whom he resided; and nine nieces and nephews.
Private cremation was held under the direction of the Hartmann Memorial Home, Hamilton.
A graveside service conducted by Mr. Bertles’ nephew, Professor Jack Lup of Florida Christian College, will be held 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Princeton Memorial Park Cemetery, Robbinsville.

Arthur C. Warner
Teacher and philanthropist
Arthur Cyrus Warner of Princeton died Sunday at home. He was 89.
Early in his career he taught history at the University of Texas and Rider University.
Mr. Warner was dedicated to civil rights especially the rights of gay citizens.
In later years his interests turned to the brain and its development beyond the norm. As a result, he founded Sentience Foundation Inc., a nonprofit corporation dedicated to sponsoring research and programs which seek the expansion of the brain’s capacities, its maintenance and its optimal health.
Born in Newark, he graduated from Princeton University in 1938 and later from Harvard Law School.
He was a second lieutenant in the Navy during World War II.
A memorial visitation will be held 7 to 9 p.m. today at Mather-Hodge Funeral Home 40 Vandeventer Ave., Princeton.

Ernest H. Kittredge
Former Princeton resident
SOUTH BRUNSWICK Ernest Howard Kittredge died Wednesday at Park Place Care Center. He was 78.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a former Princeton resident before moving to South Brunswick 35 years ago.
He established his career as an independent package designer and graphic artist in Manhattan where he later met his wife.
He enjoyed photography; playing the piano, especially the musical theater of Broadway; and was an avid collector of paper ephemera and artifacts of American pop culture.
In retirement, he was a tutor for the Literacy Volunteers of Middlesex County and a member of the Friends of South Brunswick Public Library.
He graduated from Erasmus Hall High School and Pratt Institute.
He is survived by his wife, Susan B. Kittredge of South Brunswick, whom he married in 1964; son and daughter-in-law Neil P. Kittredge and Kirsten Shaw of Brooklyn, N.Y.; grandson Asher Shaw Kittredge of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and cousins Marian Suen of White Plains, N.Y. and Edith Blatt of Forest Hills, N.Y.
Burial will be in York, Maine.

Antoinette Lapitino
Worked at Landau’s
VIERA, Fla. Antoinette "Annie" Peluso Lapitino died Thursday at the home of her daughter where she lived for the past four years. She was 95.
She was a former Princeton resident.
She was a salesperson at Landau’s clothing store in Princeton for many years.
Wife of the late Joseph Lapitino, she is survived by her daughter, Julie Lapitino, brother Andrew Peluso and many nieces and nephews in New York, New Jersey and Florida.
The funeral was held Saturday.
