Take land for parking
To the editor:
I am very concerned with the loss of parking in town as I try to shop in town as much as possible to support local merchants.
I am tired of hearing it is the county road, that is why we have the massive mess every day on North Main going under the underpass.
Why doesn’t the mayor and his legal staff change it back to right-hand turns only by Quick Chek, and no turn on red all the time out of Brooks Boulevard and Main. Traffic under the train bridge would move, then.
Parking was difficult all along and now is impossible.
I can’t tell you how many times I drive around the block to go to Manville Tobacco, across from Sieberg Used Appliances. There isn’t parking on the side streets either, due to renters over the stores and in the unopened stores taking every available spot.
I used to buy lottery tickets at the Camplain Road store, but parking is even harder there and traffic will hit you going to your car and there are very large trucks going quite fast on that street.
I fell if the mayor and his staff doesn’t react quickly there will be no downtown shopping, except at Wal-Mart. Sometimes I feel the mayor is getting something to endorse shopping in the Market Place because it is the only parking in town, county road or not.
I read about the land on the corner of South Main and Kyle streets and suggest the mayor take the land for back taxes and build a parking deck for shoppers and floods would not harm it as it would a business.
I also suggest he look into empty store fronts to possibly turn them into condos or apartments (with parking on the premises) for additional tax revenue to help the borough.
I grew up in this town and still live here and hope some suggestions can help make it a better place.

Ban pit bulls before the next attack
To the editor:
July 11 was a very bad day in Manville; let me tell you about what transpired in our beautiful neighborhood that has prompted me to write this letter.
I was outside in my front yard, when suddenly I heard my neighbor screaming. I ran over to her backyard and saw her struggling to free her Lhasa apso dog from the jaws of a vicious pit bull terrier. He had jumped over the fence into her yard as she and her little dog were taking out the garbage. The pit bull terrier immediately clamped those terrible jaws on poor little Rocky’s throat and began shaking him like a rag doll.
We were both screaming for help trying to free Rocky. I ran to the house and got the cell phone to call 911. The police responded quickly, but by this time Rocky was dead. We hurried into the house before the dog could turn on us. It was a gut-wrenching and harrowing experience!
I am asking the mayor and Borough Council to take the necessary steps to prohibit pit bullsin the town of Manville. No one can control this vicious breed of dog, and if anyone tells you otherwise, they lie.
We have another pit bull in our neighborhood and as I walk my own little dog every day I am dreading the day this other pit bull turns nasty.
They were bred to kill and they are very good at it.
Please pass an ordinance to prohibit this breed of dog in our wonderful town of Manville. Today it was a beloved pet; tomorrow it could be a child.
Please don’t put off until tomorrow what should be done today.
