Joan Neuwirth

   Joan C. Steinberg Neuwirth, 77, died Sunday, July 22, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick.
   Born in the Bronx, N.Y., she lived in East Brunswick for 36 years before moving to Monroe where she lived since 1997.
   She received a master’s degree in education from Rutgers University, New Brunswick. Prior to retiring in 1991, she was an educator for the N.J. Division of Human Services, Trenton, for 20 years.
   She enjoyed traveling and has visited almost every continent.
   She worked tirelessly championing women’s causes in the early years of the women’s movement. She was president of the National Organization for Women-NJ in the 1970s and the East Brunswick Political Caucus and had served on the Brandeis University National Women’s Committee. She was a member of the East Brunswick Board of Education from 1969 to 1972. In later years she also worked with AARP.
   Her husband, Sidney Neuwirth, died in 1997, and a daughter, Caryn Gordon, died in 1988. She is survived by her daughter, Marion Van Derveer and her husband, David, of East Brunswick; and a brother, Charles Steinberg and his wife, Gayle, of Mellville, N.Y.; her grandchildren, Daniel and his fiancée, Andrea Bredin and Joshua Van Derveer; a niece and two nephews.
   Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 24, at Mount Sinai Memorial Chapels, Cranbury Road at Evergreen Boulevard, East Brunswick. Interment followed at Washington Cemetery, South Brunswick.
