West Windsor getting more bus stops

An effort to provide greater access to NJ Transit service

WEST WINDSOR — West Windsor residents should have many more places to board an NJ Transit bus, thanks to resolutions passed by the Township Council this week.
The resolutions, approved on Monday night, establish new bus stops on roads throughout the township and on its major state road, Route 1.
"We want to have all transportation networks so people who don’t want to drive can use mass transit instead," said Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh.
New stops on township roads included some on Alexander Road, at Roszel Road and Bohren’s Way, and on Canal Pointe Boulevard at Carillion Boulevard and Heritage Boulevard.
Others are in and around the Carnegie Center and the municipal complex on Municipal Drive.
Business Administrator Christopher Marion said West Windsor officials and representatives from NJ Transit had consulted on the placement of the new bus stops.
Township officials said the designation of the stops would give them the opportunity to provide safer bus stops than many of those currently designated in the township.
"We’re going to have the opportunity to create pull-offs and other safety features with these new stops," said Mr. Parvesse. "Identifying those places is the first step."
Mayor Hsueh said he intends to mandate that new developments in the township include the construction of bus stops and pedestrian-friendly roadways.
Township officials also discussed the possibility of a park-and-ride bus system at municipal complex that could ferry West Windsor residents to the train station on select days of the week.
The township would have to keep a watch on the spaces to make sure residents from other municipalities didn’t start using them, Councilman George Borek said.
Following Monday’s resolutions, the township will have to wait for approval of the stops on the county roads and Route 1, Mr. Marion said.
The official stops approved Monday on Route 1 included several that are currently used on a more informal basis. They are located:
   • Between Emmons Drive and Meadow Road on the northbound side in front of The Square at West Windsor Shopping Center.
   • At the Carnegie Center Boulevard intersection.
In addition, stops on County Route 571 eastbound approved Monday included:
   • Clarksville Road at the Avalon Watch north entrance.
   • Clarksville Road at the Village Square entrance.
   • Route 571 between Sherbrooke Drive and Alexander Road.
   • Route 571 at Slayback Drive.
   • Route 571 at Lanwin Boulevard.
   • Route 571 at Southfield Road.
Stops on County Route 571 westbound approved Monday included:
   • Between Southfield Road and Glengarry Way.
   • Rabbit Hill Road.
   • Bernt Midland Boulevard.
   • Alexander Road.
Stops on Washington Road approved Monday included:
   • Wilder Avenue on the eastbound side.
   • Fairview Road on the westbound side.
