LAMBERTVILLE — Police were called to the corner of Union and Bridge streets last week after a large amount of fresh blood was discovered on the sidewalk.
When police arrived at about 6 a.m. July 31 and saw the gruesome puddle in front of Ennis Market on North Union Street, they followed the blood trail to an apartment building, also on North Union.
Inside a third-floor apartment, officers discovered a Hispanic man who was suffering from a severe head injury, Detective Sgt. Jeffery Jones said. The man, who police identified as Severiano Martinex, 19, told officers he was injured in a fall.
"He was uncooperative and only would say that he fell," Detective Sgt. Jones said.
But police said they had heard a rumor he "may have been jumped," Detective Sgt. Jones said.
"We’re going to look into it," Detective Sgt. Jones said.
Persons in the apartment building told investigators they did not hear any disturbance, Detective Sgt. Jones said.
Investigators canvassed the neighborhood but were unable to locate any witnesses, according to police.
The man was treated at the scene by the Lambertville-New Hope Ambulance and Rescue Squad. New Jersey State Police NorthSTAR, a medical helicopter, transported him to the Helene Fuld Medical Center in Trenton.
