Career in computing
HIGHTSTOWN Alice Anne Ritchie Navin died Tuesday at Meadow Lakes of lung cancer. She was 82.
She moved to Princeton in 1957 and was a 39-year resident before moving to Meadow Lakes in 1996.
From 1960 to 1968 she was the office manager for Lloyd Free, Hadley Cantril and Sir Arthur Lewis at the Institute for International Social Research. She also prepared statistical tables and galleys for their publications.
During the early years of computer technology in the mid-1960s Mrs. Navin learned Fortran programming at Rutgers University and was a computer programmer and technician at Princeton University and the Woodrow Wilson School from 1968 to 1981.
Born in Chicago, she was raised outside Detroit.
She was a Liggett School graduate, attended Swarthmore College and was a 1945 graduate of the University of Michigan.
She served with the American Red Cross in the Philippines from 1945 to 1946 at the end of World War II.
She married Robert E. Navin in 1949. They divorced in the 1960s.
She was an avid reader and needle pointer, often creating her own designs in needlepoint.
She assisted in developing the first computerized members’ database for the Historical Society of Princeton and served many years as a Pink Lady at the front information desk of the University Medical Center at Princeton.
She is survived by her sons Robert E., of Vienna, Va., Thomas R. of New York City and Richard C., of Montgomery; sister Jennie Q. Madden of Rochester Hills, Mich.; brother Buel T. Quirk of DeBary, Fla.; and grandchildren Andrew, Caroline, Alexander, Lindsey and Samuel.
Internment will be at Princeton Cemetery in a family ceremony.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Arthritis Association, the American Cancer Society, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Fred W. West
Retired from FMC
HILLSBOROUGH Fred W. West died Aug. 8 at Foothill Acres Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center in Hillsborough.
Born in Ottumwa, Iowa, he was a former Montgomery resident.
He received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Iowa and was retired from the FMC Corp. in Plainsboro.
An avid ham radio operator, he belonged to a number of ham radio clubs. He also had a major interest in photography, especially old 3-D cameras.
A craftsman, he built a large deck at the age of 83 and over the years created many wood pieces in his basement shop.
Father of the late Kate West-Zogg, who died in 2005, he is survived by his wife of 64 years, Hildegard West; sons Peter West of Ripon, Wisc. and Charles West of Hillsborough; daughters Nora Anderson of Montgomery and Lisa West of Hamilton; and sister Jessie Marion of Iowa.
The funeral was Aug. 9 at Kimble Funeral Home, Princeton.
A day of remembrance will be held 2 to 5 p.m. Sept. 9 at Mr. West’s 45 Sycamore Lane home in celebration of his life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to an Alzheimer’s or cancer research organization.

Princeton real estate agent
HIGHTSTOWN Ann Elizabeth Sterling died Tuesday at home. She was 72.
Born in Pittsburgh, she lived in Burlington, Ontario, for many years before moving to Hightstown 27 years ago.
She was working as a real estate agent at Prudential Fox and Roach Realtors in Princeton, a position she held for over 20 years.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Daughter of the late James C. and Anna C. Hoffman McFee, she is survived by her husband of 51 years, William Sterling; sons and daughters-in-law Mark W. and Colleen Sterling of Toronto and James S. and Pat Sterling of Galloway; daughter and son-in-law Susan L. and Richard Lovering of Robbinsville; brother James H. McFee of Hightstown; and grandchildren Julia C. Sterling, Holly E. Lovering, William A. Lovering and Brian J. Sterling.
The funeral will be 9 a.m. today at Glackin/Saul Funeral Home, 136 Morrison Ave., Hightstown.
Private cremation will follow the service.
