A recent lightning storm that caused power outages throughout Hillsborough also left two families homeless, as fires destroyed their roofs and interiors.
Lightning struck 36 Bloomingdale Dr. on Friday, between Unit 21 and 22, causing both residences to be set on fire, according to Lt. James McConnell. He said all units, including 23 and 24, were evacuated, but residents of 21 and 22 were not allowed back into their homes.
”They can’t go back until the homes are repaired,” he said. “The properties were ruled unsafe by the Hillsborough Building Inspector.”
Lt. McConnell said the families will have to make arrangements to repair the damage done to their homes before they can safely return.
Lt. McConnell said the police offered to make arrangements for lodging, but the residents all opted to find their own places to stay.
Despite the effects of the fires, no injuries were reported throughout the evening.
In addition to the fire, lightning Struck the chimney in a home on Warner Drive, as well as homes on Randolph Way, Arlene Court and Mack Drive, but residents were not forced to evacuate. Power was also restored to homes on River Road and Mill Lane after power lines in the area were struck.
Lightning also struck a power line on Pierson Drive and homes in the area were without power and phone service until about 10:45 p.m.
