For Montgomery, a rare gunpoint robbery
By: Katie Wagner
MONTGOMERY Police are still looking for four assailants in a gunpoint robbery of a Montgomery Township resident that occurred last week.
This is the first reported armed robbery of any kind the township has experienced in a few years, with the last one having been a strong-armed robbery, police said.
James J. Curry, an acting lieutenant for the Montgomery Township Police Department, said no weapon was displayed in the earlier strong-armed robbery that occurred June 14, 2004, but that he believed the perpetrator may have indicated he had a weapon.
That robbery happened after an incident of road rage that resulted in the victim being followed to his home in Montgomery by the assailant, Lt. Curry said.
According to police, the recent armed robbery occurred while the victim was walking along a path connecting Princeton Avenue and the business complex on Wall Street at 10:15 p.m. Aug. 22. The resident was approached by four males, one of whom brandished a silver handgun and demanded money, police said.
They reached into the victim’s pockets and removed an undisclosed amount of cash and fled on foot. The victim, who lives on Blue Spring Road, was not injured, police said.
"An armed robbery is not a common occurrence in Montgomery," Lt. Curry said. "We’ve had reports in the past of people reporting armed robberies since June 14, 2004, but they turned out to be hoaxes."
Within a day of these incidents being reported, police discovered the alleged victims had actually committed the robberies, he added. Police are doing an active investigation of Wednesday’s armed robbery, Lt. Curry said. Anyone with information that would assist the investigation should contact Sgt. James Gill or Officer Jason Larson at the Montgomery Police Department at 908-874-3333.
