Arnold Smolens


Retired banker
   
Arnold Smolens of Princeton died Monday. He was 86.
   A longtime Princeton resident, he resided at the Nassau Club for over 40 years.
   Mr. Smolens was a senior credit analyst and credit review officer at Princeton Bank & Trust Co. from 1960 to 1989.
   He was a member of the Old Guard.
   Mr. Smolens graduated cum laude from Friends Select School and received a bachelor’s degree in economics from the Wharton School of Commerce, University of Pennsylvania. He received a master’s degree in international organizations from the University of Michigan.
   He was an Air Force captain in the European Theater of Operations and received the Bronze Star.
   He wrote a number of articles about the European Economic Community and published "The North Atlantic Economic Community: The Name of the Game is Survival" in 1996.
   He was active for many years in the Princeton Quaker Meeting.
   In 1993, he ran for a seat on the Princeton Borough Council.
   Following his retirement, Mr. Smolens became a familiar town figure, walking the streets of Princeton in his dark suit and hat, with umbrella in hand.
   He was son of the late Maxwell and Anna Smolens and brother of the late Eleanor Segal and Stanley and Bernard Smolens.
   A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Quaker Meeting, located at the junction of Mercer Road and Quaker Road, followed by a reception at the Nassau Club.

Esther L. Oliver


Lifelong Princeton resident
   
Esther L. Oliver died Tuesday at Hospice Care at the Pavilion. She was 95.
   Born in Princeton, she was a lifelong Princeton resident and educated in the Princeton school system.
   She was employed by the Elm Club for many years as the assistant head of the club’s dining facilities.
   She was daughter of the late Richard and Cora Sweeney, wife of the late Will "King" Oliver, mother of the late William "Sonny" Oliver and Barbara Oliver Williams, sister of the late Gertrude Banks, Della Williams, Martha Stryker, Selena Garrison and James Sweeney, aunt of the late Athena Tadlock and Carl and Boyd Banks, and great-grandmother of the late Xavier Epps.
   She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Marceline O. and Ronald Yates; grandchildren Rhonna Y. Freeman, India Y. Singleton, Tracey Epps, Donna S. Williams, Bobby Williams and Marcia Lopez; nephews Lloyd Banks and Howard Sweeney; and many other relatives.
   Graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Princeton Cemetery, 29 Greenview Ave., Princeton.
   Arrangements are by the Hughes Funeral Home, Trenton.
Allen C. Bigelow Jr.


Former Princeton resident
   
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Allen Caryl Bigelow Jr. died Monday at Presbyterian Hospital. He was 87.
   He was a Princeton resident until moving to Charlotte 43 years ago as vice president of Transportation Fabric Sales for Collins and Aikman Corp.
   He was a member of the Charlotte Country Club and the Piedmont Club.
   After retirement in 1981, he became an avid golfer and traveled extensively.
   While living in Princeton, Mr. Bigelow was a member of the Pretty Brook Tennis Club and the Nassau Gun Club and served on their boards. In 1960, he won The Garden State Open 20 Gauge Skeet Championship.
   Known by his nickname "Pic", Mr. Bigelow graduated from Taft School in Watertown, Conn., where he lettered in soccer, ice hockey and tennis.
   He graduated from Princeton University with the class 1942 and was a member of the Cottage Club. He received his numerals in hockey playing first on the freshman and then on the varsity squads.
   Mr. Bigelow served in the Army during World War II and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Purple Heart and was presented the Order d’Adolph of Nassau by the Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg for his service to that country.
   Son of the late Col. A. Caryl Bigelow and Charlotte Cook Bigelow of Princeton, he is survived by his sisters, Elizabeth Stickney of Tucson, Ariz. and Katharine Hammond of Atlanta; and 10 nieces and nephews.
   A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 7 at Harry and Bryant Co. Chapel in the Oaks, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, N.C., with the Rev. Deborah Conner officiating.
   Memorial contributions may be made to Myers Park Presbyterian Church or the Harris Hospice of Presbyterian Hospital.
Anne H. Penick


Attorney
   
ARLINGTON, Va. — Anne Hogg Penick died on Aug. 21 at Georgetown Hospital after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 50.
   Before moving to the Washington area in late 1980s, she was an attorney with the ATE Corp. in San Francisco. She then worked as an attorney at the LCC Corp. in Arlington, Va.
   In the 1990s, she worked for the Democratic National Committee and did legal work on Federal Election Commission matters for both Clinton-Gore presidential campaigns.
   She was a 1979 graduate of Brown University and a 1984 graduate of the University of California’s Hastings College of the Law.
   Daughter-in-law of the late Dr. Peter and Margen Penick, longtime Princeton residents, Ms. Penick is survived by her husband, Barksdale Penick IV; daughter Alyssa Penick of Arlington; sisters Beth Sirois and Joyce Draper, both of Alexandria, Va.; and sisters-in-law Julia Penick Garry and Elizabeth Penick Romanaux, both residents of the Princeton area.
Richard Saunders


Retired from Kodak
   
Richard "Dickie" Saunders of Princeton died Tuesday at Merwick Rehab Hospital and Nursing Care after a prolonged illness. He was 69.
   He retired in 1991 as district sales manager of the Manhattan South District of the Eastman Kodak Co. after nearly 30 years with the company.
   Born in Ewington, Md., he grew up in Wilmington, Del., and graduated from Howard High School. He graduated from Delaware State University in Dover, Del. with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. A distinguished scholar and athlete, he was inducted into the Beta Sigma Chapter of The Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. In 2003, he was inducted into the Delaware Afro American Sports Hall of Fame.
   Upon graduating from college, he was hired as an accountant by DuPont in Wilmington, Del.
   In 1962, he accepted a job with the Eastman Kodak in Rochester, N.Y. He was chosen to represent Kodak at its pavilion during the 1964 World’s Fair in Flushing, N.Y. He remained with Kodak for the remainder of his career.
   Son of the late Helena and James Saunders, brother of the late Emmajean "Jeanie" Thompson, he is survived by his wife of 25 years, Marjorie "Marge" Saunders of Surprise, Ariz.; daughter and son-in-law Tanya and Stephen Wells of Keasbey; brother and sister-in-law Charles and Shirley Saunders of Wilmington, Del.; stepson Michael Carbone; grandsons Jordan and David Wells of Keasbey; nephew Damon Saunders of Wilmington, Del.; uncle Robert Rochester of Philadelphia; aunts Lucille Rochester of Philadelphia, Margaret Wright of Ewington, Md. and Dorothy Byrd of Wilmington, Del.; lifelong friends Jerome Pinkett of Wilmington, Del. and Richard Cephas, of Farmington, Conn.; and many other relatives.
   The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Pisgah A.M.E Church, 170 Witherspoon St., Princeton, with the Rev. Vernard A. Leak officiating.
   Viewing will begin at 9:30 a.m.
   Interment will follow at Princeton Cemetery.

Dawne J. Murphy


Real estate broker
   
WEST WINDSOR — Dawne J. Murphy died Aug. 23 at home. She was 81.
   Mrs. Murphy was a former resident of Chicago and Merion, Pa.
   She was a real estate broker in West Windsor, where she lived for the past 33 years.
   Mother of the late Terry and Timothy Murphy, she is survived by her husband of 63 years, Thomas P. Murphy; daughters and sons-in-law Laura and Christopher Siegler of West Windsor and Kerry and Brian Dolan of Berwyn, Pa.; sons and daughters-in-law Thomas and Kathy of Valparaiso, Ind., Mark and Karen of Moorestown and Michael and Charlotte of Moorestown; 10 grandchildren, two whom she raised, Terry and Shawn; and two great-grandchildren.
   The funeral was Monday.
