MONROE — An 18-year-old township man has admitted to committing armed robbery, police said.
Tyler Butchko, of Ives Court, told police Aug. 22 that he robbed a 19-year-old male township resident during the first week of July, police said.
Mr. Butchko was arrested and charged at 6 p.m. Aug. 22 on Willow Street in Jamesburg after a police investigation pointed to him, Detective Robert Bennett said.
At the time of the incident, police said, the victim was sitting in his car on New Street when a man whose face was covered with his shirt opened the door, pointed a gun at him and demanded his money. When the victim resisted, the man hit him in the face with his gun, police said. The victim gave the man his money, and the man ran away, police said.
Detective Bennett said the victim did not report the crime until Aug. 22, and police were able to apprehend Mr. Butchko quickly.
Police said Mr. Butchko told them that he threw the gun, a .357 replica, into Lake Manalapan. The gun was recovered with the help of the East Brunswick Police Department’s dive team.
Mr. Butchko was sent to the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center when he could not pay the $100,000 bail set on him, police said. He had been on parole after being released early for crimes committed as a juvenile, police said.
