The Jersey Shore Stallions, a 10U travel baseball team, won the Clash at the Creek Tournament championship, which was held in Lacey Township Aug. 25-27. The Stallions went 5-0 en route to their championship run, getting great pitching, defense and clutch hitting. The Stallions players are Nicky Gugliara, Mikey Caggiano, Ryan McGrane, John Diana, Danny Schirmacher, A.J. Falconite, Jake Perlmutter, Chris Loney, Brad Becker, Mike LaMattina, and Anthony Garvey. The Stallions are coached by Joe Gugliara, Buster Caggiano, Joe Falconite, Bill Schirmacher and Phil Perlmutter.
The Morgan Magic Girls Fastpitch travel softball organization will be holding final open tryouts for their 2008 season on the following date and location: Saturday, Sept. 8, at Burkes Park, Washington Road in Sayreville, for 14U (10 a.m.-noon) and 16U (noon-2 p.m.). The 8U Old Bridge Lightning travel baseball team competed in a Labor Day Tournament in Jackson. They played four pool play games, a playoff game and then a championship game last weekend, winning two out of the four games. Only giving up 23 runs, they were seeded second in the playoffs. After losing to the same team (Hackensack Baseball) the prior day on Sunday they played them on Monday in the playoffs and won 7-6 in six innings. They were down 6-3 in the game and came back in the bottom of fifth to take the lead. They then played for the championship 20 minutes later against the No. 1-seeded Staten Island team (Robert Curtolo Rangers), which beat them on Friday night, 4-3. Going up 6-0 in the fourth, the Staten Island team fought back only to come up short, losing 7- 6. It was a team effort by all of the players and coaches. These kids practice once a week and dedicate themselves to working toward achieving success. Three of the boys are from East Brunswick and the other 10 are from the Old Bridge area.
The players are Robert Dacunto, Kyle Jeffers, Connor Freel, C.J. Santoro, Zach Scire, Alec Chaskes, David Bermudez, Matt Derizzi, Brandon Sciavolino, Nick Conception, T.J. Angstadt, Tyler Burnham and Robert McKiernan. The coaches are Barry Chaskes, Nelson Bermudez, Tom Angstadt and manager Frank Santoro.
The annual Old Bridge Mayor Trophy game between the Raritan Bay Cougars and the Sayrewood South Rebels was on Sept. 2. In the Junior Pee Wee game, the Raritan Bay Cougars defeated the Sayrewood South Rebels, 27-0. Jordan Fetterman threw three TD passes to Julanee Prince, Brandon Giles and Daniel Grillo, while Minkah Fitzpatrick scored a rushing TD. The team also got a great defensive effort with two interceptions, one by Brandon Giles and one by Minkah Fitzpatrick.
At the Pee Wee level, the Sayrewood South Rebels defeated the Raritan Bay Cougars, 35-12. The Cougar scores were by Alex Hoheb and Dwayne Trawick.
At the Midget level, Jesse Meyer threw a touchdown pass to Jarrod Eardley, while on the ground Aston Austin and Jesse Myer scored and Julian Daly scored twice. The Midgets also put forth a great defensive effort with an interception by Louis Millan.
Registration is now being accepted for the fall Old Bridge Ice Hockey Instructional Program, beginning Sunday, Oct. 7. The 11-week program for ages 5-8 will be held 5:15-6:30 p.m., while the program for ages 9-13 will run 6:30-7:45 p.m. The cost is $250 for residents and $300 for nonresidents (add $1 administrative fee per registration). The Sayreville Lady Blue Devils U16 girls soccer team is looking to add some players for the 2007-08 season.
