This year on Sept. 15 for our daughters’ (Theza and Callia) fifth birthdays, which happen to fall two weeks apart in September, my friend Patti and I decided to do a joint party. We feel the kids have enough of the endless random toys and gifts they receive for every birthday and big event, so as part of the invite, we have asked their friends to please bring a new, unwrapped book in lieu of a gift, suitable for kids their age.
After the party, we will take the girls to deliver the books to The Cherry Tree preschool in West Windsor which caters to the homeless of Mercer County. Every child there will be able to bring a new book home to herald in the new school year.
All children attending the party will leave with bookmarks in their goodie bags to remind them of their gift.
Theza and Callia are thrilled with this idea and excited to help out fellow children who have so little. The one time my daughter, Theza, asked about if she would get any gifts at all, I reassured her she would from her relatives, but that one of the most wonderful presents she would get is to actually give. She is excited to do that.
We are so proud of our girls and look forward to the big event and the delivery of all these books.
