On Oct. 14, the 14th annual Komen New Jersey Race for the Cure will be held at Six Flags Great Adventure, Jackson. The race, hosted by Susan G. Komen for the Cure Central and South Jersey, includes a USTAF certified Women’s and Men’s 5K Run, a co-ed 2.5- mile and 1-mile walk, and children’s fun runs.
The festivities will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the race day event registration fee is $30 for adults and $15 for children 10 and under. To pre-register for the race, sign up to volunteer, or for more information go to www.komencsnj.org or call (609) 896- 1201.
Attracting more than 20,000 participants, survivors and activists, the Race for the Cure is the largest 5K race in New Jersey, according to a press release. More than a walk and run, the race brings together breast cancer survivors, loved ones, supportive community members and local organizations for one cause – to save lives. It is a day of hope, remembrance, and inspiration for all.
After 13 years in the Princeton area, this is the first year that Six Flags Great Adventure will host the event.
“We are so excited about this partnership with Six Flags. The new location is accessible to Komen supporters throughout our service area and will help the race to continue to grow,” stated Nancy Healey, executive director of Komen Central and South.
In addition to hosting the event, Six Flags will offer half-price admission to the theme park following the race to any registered race participant. Additionally, Six Flags will donate $5 from each admission purchased by race participants back to Komen.
“This gives people the opportunity to make a day out of the Race. We anticipate our long-time supporters will follow up to Great Adventure as well as gain new participants,” Healy said.
This year’s event is expected to raise $2.1 million.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure works to save lives and end breast cancer by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures. Of the net proceeds from the race, 25 percent will support national breast cancer research programs and the remaining 75 percent will stay in the local community, according to the community.
Komen Central and South Jersey’s vision is to reduce late stage diagnoses of breast cancer through aggressive education and screening initiatives throughout the affiliate’s 13-county service area.
“We rely on the support of our sponsors, volunteers, team captains and donors to make the race a success and are truly grateful for their continued support,” said Healey.
Local Race sponsors include Six Flags Great Adventure, L’Oreal Paris, Women’s Club of Westlake, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Johnson & Johnson, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, Commerce Bank, Abraxis BioScience, SES Americom, LifeCell, sanofi-aventis, Waterford Crystal and Norvartis Oncology.
