From The Rev. Carol S. Haag of Princeton
Our representatives are not representing us if they refuse to listen to what their constituents have to say. This is August, the time congress adjourns so their members can communicate with the folks back home.
On the evening of Tuesday, Aug. 28, there were four large and successful “Take a Stand” Town Hall meetings on the Iraq War with members of Congress in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Each was attended by over 100 people, though not one of the Republican representatives in these districts chose to show up – not Mike Ferguson, not Chris Smith, not Todd Platts and not Jim Gerlach. They did not even send a staff member.
How can a U.S. representative say they represent their districts when they won’t even come to a meeting with over a hundred of their constituents to discuss the issue at the top of voters’ concerns, i.e. stopping the Iraq War?
