The Lawrence High School boys soccer team did not play up to their potential in their first game.
The Cardinals started the Colonial Valley Conference season with a 4-0 loss to Princeton on Friday.
”We can play with them,” said first year coach PJ Barrett. “I don’t think we showed what we’re capable of.”
Lawrence had higher expectations for the season opener but Princeton proved to be too tough.
”We had some mental lapses,” said Barrett. “Princeton definitely capitalized on their opportunities.”
Lawrence held the Little Tigers to one goal in the first half, but Princeton pulled further ahead in the second half
”I think it was an even game,” said Barrett. “We were pretty even with them until midway through the second half.”
Lawrence goalie Brian Pillsbury made 15 saves as Princeton out shot the Cardinals, 19-7.
”Brian Pillsbury did an outstanding job in goal,” said Barrett.
The Cardinal coach also said Doug Franc worked exceptionally hard for Lawrence as well as Pawal Romanski.
After the opening loss, Lawrence took two days of practice to figure out what went wrong against Princeton.
”We refocused,” said Pillsbury. “We acknowledged our problems and those mistakes are corrected.”
”The program is going in the right direction,” said Barrett. “The kids are working hard.”
NOTE: The Cardinals were supposed to play Nottingham Tuesday Night at Zimmer Field, but the game was postponned until yesterday (Wednesday) because of rain.
Lawrence will play Notre Dame tomorrow (Friday).
