Administrators from Princeton Township and Borough have begun a new round of talks on the Princeton Public Library parking subsidy that was cancelled in February, according to the mayors of the two municipalities.
The announcement came at the library’s board of trustees meeting Tuesday night.
The subsidy was dropped after the two municipalties failed to agree on a new cost-sharing formula. Library officials have blamed the cancellation for a subsequent drop in library users, which has been documented with statistics showing decreased gate counts and café and gift shop revenues.
Princeton Township Mayor Phyllis Marchand said the initial meeting of the administrators was also attended by Harry Levine, who was president of the board of trustees at the time the new library was constructed.
Mayor Marchand and Princeton Borough Mayor Mildred Trotman said that the new talks would not likely reach a resolution of the issue in time for the library board’s October meeting because any decision would have to go before the respective governing bodies. However, they indicated that an agreement could be reached by the end of the year. —Nick Norlen
