If the Bordentown High field hockey team goes on to have a successful season, the Scotties need look no further than this past Monday’s 2-1 home win over New Egypt as the turning point.
“It was a motivating victory,” said Kim Fithen. “This is my first year coaching in Burlington County, but when you coach in any county you know the programs which are established. So to beat a quality program like New Egypt is encouraging.”
Ashley Adams, the Scotties’ starting goalie, was hit on the helmet and suffered a mild concussion. Adams (seven saves) came out for Stephanie Tahey, who made two very good saves.
“New Egypt got a penalty corner with no time left on the clock and she (Tahey) stepped in and held her ground on it,” added Fithen. “Defensively they all played well. Caitlin Moynihan actually stopped a goal on her stick.”
Megan Meszaros scored in the first half for Bordentown, but it was sophomore Ashley Bronston who delivered the unassisted game-
winner 13 minutes into the second half.
“Meaghan Tohill was very strong in the middle,” said Fithen, who felt Lindsay Bell had a very steady game at the sweeper position. The Scotties needed that win because they were coming off of last Friday’s tough 3-0 home loss to Delran. Adams had 13 saves to keep the game close.
On September 13, a talented Cinnaminson team won 3-0 at Bordentown.
Adams posted eight saves in the game. The Scotties got off just three shots.
Bordentown (2-3) was scheduled to have hosted Medford Tech yesterday (Wednesday). Bordentown is scheduled at Holy Cross on Friday, at Florence on Monday and at Burlington Township on Tuesday.
NBC
“They (the NBC varsity field hockey players) went into the RV game (last Wednesday) knowing they were going to win,” said Joanne Hensch, the head coach of Northern Burlington. “We had a nice pasta party at Rachel Panella’s house the night before the game and after that they were fired up.”
Although it fell behind 1-0, NBC dominated Rancocas Valley in a 2-1 win at home on September 12. Two minutes after RV’s goal, Jess Kotelnicki scored for NBC to even the game at 1-1. A short while later Rachel Leedy, who won the Attack Award for the game, came off the bench and fired in the game-
winner for the Greyhounds.
“This past week in practice she (Leedy) looked really good,” said Hensch, who decided to play Leedy extra minutes in the game. That decision, along with others, turned out to be a great one for Hensch, whose team took six shots while Rancocas Valley got off five shots on goal.
The Greyhounds’ defense was so good that Jess Ridolfino, Marie Worsham and Michelle Smith all shared the Defensive Award for the contest. Rachel Pandl won the Hustle Award.
“Marie Worsham (a left-side back) is consistent and she’s a good communicator,” added Hensch.
Northern Burlington breezed to an easy 4-0 win over Burlington City on Friday.
“They are a much better team than they were last year,” said Hensch of Burlington Township.
Kotelnicki scored a pair of first-
half goals, which were assisted by Dana Stefanoni and Rachel Pandl, respectively, to help the Greyhounds break out to a 3-0 halftime lead. Carli DiCioccio (assisted by Jess Nutt) and Smith (assisted by Ridolfino) had the other scores for the victors in the contest.
Lauren Pigott did a lot to set up the offense and consequently she won the Hustle Award, while Pandl, a junior midfielder, earned the Attack Award with some sensational passes.
“She kept the ball on the attack for us,” said Hensch of Pandl. But the player who had the most amazing game for NBC was Smith, who won the Defensive Award and scored a second-half goal which was so gorgeous that Hensch can’t talk about it enough.
“Michelle Smith had our best goal of the week! Jess Ridolfino dumped it over to Michelle and she (Smith) flicked it into the left corner of the cage. It was the most beautiful goal!,” added Hensch.
NBC goalie Kaylen Basset needed to make just two saves to earn the shutout. NBC took 13 shots on goal and had 14 penalty corners to just five by Burlington Township.
NBC (3-1) was scheduled against Pemberton on Wednesday. NBC is scheduled to host Moorestown on Friday and Medford Tech on Monday.
FLORENCE
Young and inexperienced, the Florence High field hockey team, nonetheless, has been playing well and scoring a lot of goals as of late.
On Sept 12, the Flashes blanked the Blue Devils 3-0 at Burlington City. Emily Million, Claudia Schafer and Dezarae Fillmyer each knocked in a goal while Sarah Muchowski had two assists and Molly Ftzpartick set up a tally.
Florence goalie Katelyn Dmitruck made 14 saves in the shutout while her team took 16 shots on goal.
Last Friday at home, Katie Schreck scored three goals to spark a 6-0 Florence victory over Maple Shade. Fillmyer, Muchowski and Brittany Hiros also scored.
Schreck also fired in a goal in Florence’s 2-1 home loss to Moorestown Friends this past Tuesday.
Florence was schedule to have hosted Palmyra yesterday (Wednesday). Florence is scheduled to host Riverside on Friday, Bordentown on Monday and New Egypt next Wednesday.
