“They passed their first big test,” said Bordentown Regional High boys’ varsity head soccer coach Mike Brennan after his Scotties defeated the Burlington Township Falcons at Joe Lawrence Park on September 12.
After two easy wins to start the season, Bordentown’s new collection of potent offensive players were kept off the scoreboard by a stingy Burlington Township defense in the first half.
But trying to keep D.J. Kafer from scoring in any game is a difficult task to say the least. Using his blinding speed and amazing footwork, Kafer scored a goal off a Drew Turgyan pass five minutes into the second half. Then Kafer, playing the role of distributor, set up a Peter Paye goal.
Bordentown goalie Chris Schaeffer stopped a half a dozen shots to post the shutout.
“We had a great game against Burlington Township and then Friday came and Tim (Tedesco) got his boys (Northern Burlington ) ready to play us,” noted Brennan. “Northern’s kids played tough and they outplayed us.”
NBC slipped by Bordentown 1-0 on a Ryan Walsh second-half goal before a packed house at Joe Lawrence Park last Friday night.
“It was a great atmosphere for a soccer game. The only thing missing was a goal for us,” said Brennan, whose team did get a solid nine-save performance out of Schaeffer.
Then on Tuesday night at Maple Shade, the Scotties trounced the Wildcats, 4-1.
“We were good enough to win,” said Brennan, whose Scotties got goals from Kafer, Kyle Bijou, Frank Korosec and Turgyan (assist). while Paye had two assists. “Chris Schaeffer made six saves and he has been solid for me all year. While many people worried as to whether Schaeffer would be able to replace an All-State goalie like C.J. Dixon, Brennan never did. As a former standout goalie himself, Brennan knew that Schaeffer had the “chops” to play well. Bordentown took 22 shots versus Burlington Township.
Bordentown (4-1) is scheduled to host Cinnaminson today (Thursday). It is scheduled at Florence next Monday.
FLORENCE
The Florence High boys’ varsity soccer team dropped a 2-0 home game to an improved New Egypt team last Friday. Then Delran hosted and defeated Florence 7-0 this past Tuesday.
In addition to its scheduled home game with Bordetown on Monday, Florence is scheduled at Palmyra today (Thursday). It is scheduled to host Burlington City tomorrow (Friday).
NBC
The Northern Burlington County Regional High boys’ varsity soccer team had an up and down week which featured a quality 1-0 win over Bordentown at Joe Lawrence Park last Friday night.
“That was a nice game. I thought both teams played well,” said Tim Tedesco, NBC boys’ varsity soccer coach.
The contest was a tight one throughout as fans for both sides lined the field to support their respective teams. Then with seven minutes left in the contest, Saidu Mustapha made a pretty move to slip by his man and freed himself up to deliver a perfect pass to Ryan Walsh, who booted in the game-
winner for the Greyhounds.
Steve Fenstermacher was brilliant in goal for Northern, making nine saves to preserve the shutout. As great as Walsh’s huge goal was, Tedesco considered his defenders (Joe Larkins, Adam Rotsides, Bryant Castens, Wade Veselka and others) to be the stars of the game. They held one of the best Scotties’ offensive teams in years off the scoreboard.
Last Wednesday, NBC hosted and crushed Pemberton 3-0. Usually 3-0 games are not blowouts. But this one was as NBC out shot Pemberton 39 to 5. Pemberton goalie Jamie Backas (27 saves) kept it from being a 7-0 shutout with his stellar play in goal.
Greyhounds’ star Dave Ongaro scored in the opening minute and it was smooth sailing from there. Late in the first half, NBC pumped its edge to 2-0 when Eric Csontos scored off of a Brandon Cominsky feed. Then in the second half, Brandon Korneluk converted a solid Ongaro pass into NBC’s third goal.
“That was not a well-played game. It was sloppy on both sides,” said Tedesco, who felt his team should have scored more. Fenstermacher (three saves) and Pat Tobin (save) shared the goalie duties for the victors.
Then this past Tuesday night, a very talented Cinnaminson team defeated NBC 6-0 at Cinnaminson.
“That game was horrendous,” said Tedesco, who felt his club had too many breakdowns across the board. “They pretty much scored when they shot. Their shots were very good.”
Tedesco played Fenstermacher in goal in the first half and Tobin in goal in the second stanza. But neither could stop the Pirates’ high-
powered attack.
Even so, it was the Greyhounds’ first bad game of the season and Tedesco knows how to correct most of the areas where his club struggled. NBC (2-2) is scheduled to host Delran on Friday and Medford Tech next Monday.
