Money authorized for stormwater treatment device

Township officials cleared a minor roadblock last week on their way to completing the construction of the north section of Liberty Way.
On Sept. 10, the Township Committee authorized an additional $18,230 for the bridge portion of the project, over Cranbury Brook, to pay for a stormwater treatment device that would filter out solid waste from the brook. The north section of Liberty Way runs from Security Drive to Half Acre Road.
The device is required by the Delaware Raritan Canal Commission, which must approve projects in the watershed, which includes Cranbury Brook. The township’s Public Works Department will have to maintain the treatment device, Township Engineer Cathleen Marcelli said.
The cost of the bridge is estimated to be between $11 million and $16 million. Meco Inc., of Millstone, is under contract to do the project.
Liberty Way will run from South River Road to Station Road in the warehouse district. It is designed to help divert truck traffic off the portion of Route 130 that runs through Cranbury by giving trucks an easier way to get to N.J. Turnpike Exit 8A.
Portions of the road have been completed in recent years, with some paid for with state and county grants and others paid for by warehouse owners whose properties would be serviced by the road.
