    DURHAM, N.C. — Dr. Richard H. Gustafson died Wednesday at home. He was 78.
   He was a former West Windsor resident.
   He was a research fellow in the field of antibiotic resistance at American Cyanamid in West Windsor until his retirement.
   He received his doctorate in virology from the Waksman Institute of Microbiology at Rutgers University.
   As an active member of the American Rhododendron Society, he served as president of the Princeton chapter. He was an avid rhododendron hybridizer and plant photographer.
   Dr. Gustafson had a lifelong interest in classical music and was a strong supporter of the arts in the Princeton area, including McCarter Theatre, and for many years was a volunteer at radio station WWFM.
   He is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Jeanne K. Gustafson; daughters Lisa J. Foulkes-Arnold and Kathryn E. Gustafson, both of Durham, and Kirsten Gustafson-Kapur of Mendham; twin brother Robert C. Gustafson; and seven grandchildren.
   The funeral was Monday.
