-8HOCKEY- Only in its second year of existence as a varsity team, the Robbinsville High field hockey squad is discovering that its reputation is so good it’s getting everyone’s "A" game.
Such was the case this past Monday when a re-charged West Windsor-Plainsboro South team beat Robbinsville, 2-1, at Robbinsville.
The energetic Pirates got a pair of goals by Tory Sharpless to take a 2-0 lead. In the second half, Robbinsville played better and Emilie Taylor fired in a score to make it a one-goal game. But the Pirates held on to win despite being outshot by the Ravens, 9-5. Robbinsville goalie Kellye Statz made 3 saves in the contest.
The past week started out very well for Robbinsville, however, with the Ravens creaming Notre Dame, 5-1, at Robbinsville on Tuesday, September 18th.
Taylor, who is clearly one of the better players in the entire CVC, tallied four out of the Ravens’ five goals and she even assisted on Lacey Lamanna’s goal. The Ravens dominated Notre Dame from start to finish.
Unfortunately, things did not go nearly as well for the Ravens in a 3-1 loss against West Windsor-Plainsboro North at Plainsboro last Thursday.
Robbinsville varsity head coach Naoma Cordi was coaching against her former Lawrence High head coach Shannon Maruca. However, this was a game which came down to the players. And the Knights had just a little too much speed for the Ravens to match. Nonetheless, Taylor is such a gamer she would not let her club go down quietly as she fired in a goal to cut Robbinsville’s deficit to 2-1 with just under 20 minutes remaining in the contest. But that would be as close as Robbinsville would get to winning the game. West Windsor-Plainsboro North took 15 shots on goal while Robbinsville had 6. Statz kept her club in the game with 11 saves.
The Ravens (4-3) lost a couple of tough ones this past week, but they must remain focused on their primary goal, which is making the playoffs.
Robbinsville was scheduled to have played at Lawrence this past Tuesday. It is scheduled at Hamilton West today (Thursday). Next Tuesday, Robbinsville is scheduled to host Nottingham.
