From the League of Women Voters
The Hopewell Valley League of Women Voters reminds area residents that Oct. 16 is the last day to register to vote.
To register to vote in New Jersey, you must be a US citizen, at least 18 by the date of the election, and be a resident of the county for at least 30 days.
You are not eligible to register to vote if you are serving a sentence or on parole or probation, as a result of a conviction of an indictable offense under state or federal law. If you are no longer serving a sentence or are on parole or probation because of a felony conviction, however, you can vote in New Jersey.
Voter registration forms, change of name and address forms, and absentee ballot applications are available from libraries as well as local municipal offices:
— Hopewell Township, 201 Washington Crossing-Pennington Road, Titusville, 08650. Phone: 737-0605.
— Hopewell Borough, 4 Columbia Ave., Hopewell, 08625. Phone: 466-2636.
— Pennington Borough, 30 N. Main St., Pennington, 08534. Phone: 737-0276.
Oct. 16 also is the last day to change name or voting address. Change of name and address forms are available from libraries as well as local municipal offices, as listed above.
Change of name — You are entitled to vote only in the next election by signing both your previous and new name at the polls. After that, you must re-register in your new name.
Change of address within the county — By Oct. 16, you must file a change of address form with the municipal clerk or the county commissioner of registration. After that date, you may correct your registration on election day at the office of the municipal clerk in the municipality to where you have moved.
Change of address outside the county — By Oct. 16, you must reregister in your new county. If you move after that date, you can vote in your former election district after signing an “Affirmation of Residency” form.
By logging on to www.njelections.org, you can print a registration form, complete the required information, then mail it to the Commissioner of Registration in the county where you live. Faxed or e-mailed copies are not acceptable, since an original signature is required.
The general election is Nov. 6. Polls are open from 6 a.m.-8 p.m. Mailed Absentee Ballot applications must be received by the county clerk by Oct. 30.
