MADISON, Conn. — The Rev. Bradford Brooks Locke Jr. died Saturday. He was 83.
The Rev. Locke was born in Princeton and was grandson of Henry Burchard Fine, the former dean of Princeton University and head of the mathematics department.
He retired in 1995 after 40 years as an Episcopal priest, primarily in Connecticut.
A Marine veteran of World War II, he was in the Battle of Iwo Jima and witnessed the raising of the flag on Mt. Suribachi.
He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia in 1949 and a master’s degree in theology from Virginia Theological Seminary in 1952.
Following graduation, he was appointed curate of St. Marks Episcopal Church in Mt. Kisco, N.Y. in 1952. He became rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Guilford, Conn., in 1955, retiring in 1995.
He served as assistant commissioner for 25 years and assisted in founding the housing authority in Guilford.
Son of the late Bradford B. Locke and Philena F. Fine Locke, he is survived by daughters and son-in-law Suzanne G. Locke of Guilford, Conn. and Nancy A. Locke and Mark Serlin of Norwalk, Conn.; and sister Philena L. Richards of Damariscotta, Maine.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christ Episcopal Church, 11 Park St., Guilford, Conn.
Visiting hours are 5 to 8 p.m. today at Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church St., Guilford, Conn.
