Learning center honors community volunteers

EATONTOWN – The SCAN Learning Center honored four individuals whose contributions have supported SCAN and its mission to bring lifelong education to older adults.

The John Wanat Leadership Award was presented to Gary Engelstad, Seabrook director of resident life for his continued support of SCAN and the pivotal role he played in SCAN’s growth by creating SCAN’s first satellite campus at Seabrook five years ago.

The Sister Mary Simon Robb Humanitarian Award was presented to Robert Stroebel, vice president of Commerce Bank, for his commitment and service on SCAN’s board of directors.

The Ed Gorman Volunteer of the Year award was presented to Frank Remski, who has single handedly maintained SCAN’s computer lab and taught many computer classes for more than 10 years. This year a second Ed Gorman Award was presented to Douglas Powell as the face of SCAN’s WIN 15 television show.

The 19th awards presentation took place Sept. 11 at Seabrook in Tinton Falls.
