Michael Baur of Howell, a graduate of Brookdale Community College, has been named a 2007 Academic All-American in soccer by the National Junior College Athletic Association. Baur, who was a twoyear starter on Brookdale’s men’s soccer team, was a four-time dean’s list recipient at BCC. He was a member of Brookdale’s Alpha Phi Theta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society of Two-Year Colleges, and an enrolled Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) cadet at Rutgers University.
Baur majored in international relations at BCC, graduating with distinguished scholar honors. He is now attending Rutgers University on a scholarship.
Boris Shabovta of Manalapan is the second leading scorer on the Felician College men’s soccer team. A junior midfielder, he has two goals and two assists through Felician’s first 12 matches (0-10-2). He has started 11 games.
Shabovta is a native of Russia and attended John Dewey High School in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Paul Calafiore, a freshman from Howell, has played his way into the starting lineup for the Rutgers University men’s soccer team. Calafiore is playing back and midfield for the Scarlet Knights, who are 3-6-1 overall.
Rutgers head coach Bob Reasso said he liked Calafiore’s versatility, which gives him the option of playing Calafiore either in the back on defense or in midfield.
Calafiore is a graduate of Howell High School. Last fall, he led the Rebels to an unbeaten regular season and the Shore Conference A North Division title.
Howell’s Mike Krol has appeared in every game played by the Montclair State University men’s soccer team. The freshman midfielder has two goals and three assists for the Red Hawks, who are 10-1-1 and ranked 13th in the country among NCAA Division III teams.
Krol is a Howell High School graduate. He teamed with Calafiore to lead the Rebels to the A North championship and an unbeaten regular season in 2006.
A new Central Jersey 10-U travel baseball team is looking for highly committed players. The team will play in local and out-of-state tournaments starting in the spring of 2008. St. Pete Star benefited from a late-stretch traffic jam to win the $55,285 New Jersey Futurity for 3- year-old pacers by a neck at Freehold Raceway. Time of the mile was 1:54.2.
Daniel Dube drove Sts Pete Star to the win that pushed the colt’s 2007 earnings to more than $135,000. Owned by Brick’s Jeffrey Bamond and trained by Mark Kesmodel, St. Pete Star has been in the money in 18 of his 26 starts this year. Since Bamond purchased the colt in early May, he has not missed a check in any race.

Freehold Raceway hosted the $35,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes Final for 2-year-old pacers that went to Happy Dreamer.
Driven by Pat Berry, the filly went straight to the front from post eight and was parked for the first half mile. Despite going the extra distance on the outside, Happy Dreamer pulled away to a five-and-three-quarterlength victory in 1:56.4.
Owned by Lomangino Standardbreds of Tinton Falls and trained by Julie Miller, Happy Dancer has finished in the money in all four of her career starts, including wins in her last two starts. Happy Dancer set the Green Acres freshman filly record of 1:55.4 at Freehold in her previous start.
