I would like to acknowledge and publicly thank a special group of young ladies from South Brunswick.
I am a seven-year breast cancer survivor and after participating in past Breast Cancer 3-Day events this year I decided to challenge myself and registered to participate in two Breast Cancer 3-Day events this year, as a crew member supporting the walkers in Philadelphia and to walk 60 miles over three days in Tampa.
While the crew is not required to fundraise I wanted to at least be able to raise enough money as to “cover” my expense as a participant for the weekend. As a walker in the event, you are required to raise a minimum of $2,200 to participate, which is where the South Brunswick High School girls volleyball team comes in.
These young ladies learned of my challenge and sprang into action in an effort to support my fundraising goal and hope to see a cure for breast cancer in my lifetime.
During their season, without my knowledge, the team held a bake sale and collection in my honor, enabling me to meet and exceed my personal goal of $3,500 in fundraising for both events.
When the tri-captains presented me with the money they raised I was so touched that these girls would rally behind me and the cause. I am so grateful for your support and that of your families who did the baking for your sale, as well as those that made a purchase or threw some money in the jar.
While I was crewing the 3-Day in Philadelphia, I suffered a stress fracture of my foot and was unable to participate in the 60-mile walk in Tampa this past weekend. While I was heartbroken not to be there with my mom and my sister, I am happy to say that more than $6 million was raised in Philadelphia and $5.4 million in Tampa to be used for funding for breast cancer research and education.
The experience of participating in the 3-Day is an incredibly emotional, spirited and inspirational one to say the least. Having the support of this wonderful group of young ladies just makes it even more so.
Thank you.
