Brick youth football teams excel over the weekend

Jesse Lyon scored two touchdowns as the playoff-bound Brick Dragons Midgets beat Howell, 21-6, in Jersey Shore Pop Warner Football League action over the weekend.

Brandon Kieslor at quarterback and Zack Saggau at cornerback turned in solid efforts for the 5-3 Dragon Midgets, who will compete in the playoffs this weekend.

The Dragons Junior Pee Wee White team, also bound for the playoffs this weekend, notched their seventh straight shutout after a season-opening 6-6 tie when Joe Webb’s two touchdown receptions of 50 and 35 yards from Dan Berg sparked a 21-0 victory over Middletown. Brian Matthews ran 10 yards for another score. Tackles Nick Tartaglione and Austin Koziol, ends Casselli and Joe Phillips, cornerbacks Joe Di- Lauro and Matthews, linebackers Craig Levine, Kyle Wojtaszek and Sherry and safety Chris Lopez all had a hand in another dominant defensive performance.

In other action, the Junior Midgets got their first victory, 30-6, as Chris Parlow scored twice and Joe Bench and Bill Berg added touchdown runs. Vincent Favia kicked three conversions.

The Pee Wees edged Neptune, 7-6, as John Fuino ran 10 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter and Brendan Darcy ran in the deciding extra point.

Tackle Michael Muratore and linebackers Drew Scott and David Kearns led the defense for the 3-5 Dragons.

Ray Fattarusso scored the touchdown for the Junior Pee Wee Green (1-7) in its 28- 6 loss to Neptune.

As for the Mustangs, the playoffbound Junior Midgets (6-2) beat Long Branch, 30-0, and both teams play again in the opening round on Sunday at Neptune at 2 p.m. Doug Chuck caught two touchdown passes, one from Anthony Fontana and another from Zack Santos on a halfback option. Shaquan Reid tran back a punt and Anthony Miller kicked three extra points.

The Mustang Midgets, who had a bye in the final weekend of regular season league action last weekend, also advance into the playoffs this weekend with a 6-1 record. The A South Division champions play at Veterans Memorial Middle School Field on Sunday at 1 p.m. and will look to avenge an 8-0 season-opening loss against A North champion Asbury Park. That winner advances into the regional playoffs.

Pee Wee Gold (4-4) lost to Howell, 18-0, and play against Ocean on Sunday in Neptune at a time to be announced. Pee Wee Green lost, 7-6, to Wall and the Junior Pee Wees lost, 24-0, to Howell in other league action.
