Charles N. Schooley Jr.
OCEAN TOWNSHIP Charles N. Schooley Jr. of Ocean Township and Vero Beach, Fla. died Oct. 18 at the age of 82.
Born in Walnford, he had been a longtime resident of the Allentown area, retiring to Surf City. Mr. Schooley later lived in Vero Beach, Fla. and Ocean Township.
At the age of 17, he joined the Army when Pearl Harbor was attacked, serving in the First Cavalry Amphibious Engineers in the Pacific. He and the First Cavalry were first in many of the Japanese occupied islands and first in Japan.
After the war, Mr. Schooley earned an aeronautical degree from Parks Air College in St. Louis. He later received his teaching certification from Trenton State College.
He owned Schooley’s Heating and Plumbing in Allentown for ten years, and he taught at Trenton Central Vocational High School for 22 years.
Mr. Schooley had many interests including golf, tennis, sailing, jewelry-making, dancing, woodworking, painting, fishing and skiing; and he began windsurfing at the age of 62. He always enjoyed times with his family.
Husband of the late Ann Lamb Schooley, he is survived by his wife, Beatrice Adams Lawrence; his four daughters, Lynn Totten, Lois Bowne, Jean Conway and Joan McCloughan; his son, Jack Schooley; his sister, Marian Cunningham and her children, Carol and Robert; seven grandchildren, Robert, Rebecca, Brian, Timbre, Steven, Ann and Scott; and two great-grandchildren, Simon and Matias.
Cremation and burial at Crosswicks Cemetery were private and under the direction of Damiano Funeral Home of Long Branch.
