Lamenting fate of 1860 House

Poona Pant, Suzanne Hunt, Lucy Graves McViker, Jean Davidson
As members of the Friday watercolor class at the Montgomery Center for the Arts, it is with great sadness and shock we read of the center’s financial demise and the 1860 House’s imminent closing (The Packet, Nov. 2).
For those of us who attended classes, the 1860 House serves as a lovely, peaceful oasis in the midst of busy lives and a bustling world. Surrounded by the beauty of the Montgomery countryside, capturing the rolling fields and towering trees in watercolor is inspiring. Heading for the 1860 House each week, class members look forward to being together, painting and critiquing each others work as a group. The special farmhouse has provided outstanding galleries for displaying paintings and craft items. Little did we know of the monumental financial problems faced by the board. We only wonder why we did’t know. Is there nothing that can be done to save this beautiful spot? Have all avenues been explored? To allow this gem to disappear as an art center lacks foresight and is a true disappointment.
