Clyde Knechel, 51, of New Hope was charged with drunken driving Halloween night.
Police saw Mr. Knechel driving on North Union Street at 8:20 p.m. He reportedly was operating a decommissioned police vehicle, which was purchased used, police said.
Mr. Knechel had a spotlight on the vehicle as well as a set of dashboard mounted flashing lights activated as he attempted to make his way on North Union Street, which was heavily trafficked by children trick-or-treating.
Vehicles tried to pull out of Mr. Knechel’s way in response to his lights. Mr. Knechel, who is not law enforcement, came to a stop at the intersection of Delaware Avenue.
He had open containers of beer as well as beer on ice in the vehicle, police said.
He also was charged with reckless driving, driving while suspended, consumption of alcohol in a vehicle and having a prohibited spotlight.
Two Philadelphia men were charged with theft Saturday after they were found with items stolen from a local eatery.
Police said they saw a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of Nicola’s Pizzeria at 4 a.m. The men, Timothy Baumann, 19, and Roy Conner, 20, had a sign as well as bottles of soda in their vehicle, which they admitted to taking from the pizzeria, police said.
They were released without bail.
A Lambertville man was struck by a vehicle late Saturday afternoon as he attempted to cross Route 165 at the intersection of Route 518.
The victim, Charles Newkirk, 55, of Lincoln Avenue was trying to cross the four-lane highway when he was struck by a vehicle traveling south, which was operated by Tara Sherwin, 28, of Flemington at 4:50 p.m.
Mr. Newkirk was taken to Capital Health Systems at Fuld trauma center by the Lambertville-New Hope Ambulance and Rescue Squad. Paramedics from Hunterdon Medical Center assisted.
Mr. Newkirk had a minor head injury and was released the same day at 11 p.m.
Police said an unknown vehicle going south stopped to allow Mr. Newkirk to cross the highway. Ms. Sherwin, who was in the other lane, could not see Mr. Newkirk until he darted out in front of her vehicle.
Police said speed was not a factor in this accident.
The investigation is continuing.
West Amwell
Oct. 24 at 6:15 a.m., there was a one-vehicle accident on Route 518 near the intersection of Hewitt Road.
Police said Michael Lewis, 18 of Hopewell was going west, approaching a curve, when he lost control on the wet road, left the road, slid to the side and crashed into several trees.
No injuries were reported. Mr. Lewis was charged with careless driving.
Oct. 27, there was a minor one-vehicle accident on Route 179 near Old York Road.
Police said Christine Bolles, 55, of Lambertville was going south when her vehicle hit a tree that had fallen on the shoulder.
The vehicle had damage to the passenger side mirror. No injuries were reported.
